#Machair
Is Machair "British culture"? Fuck off. Just fucking say English. Like every single racist now is too shite scared to say what they mean outright

Ruff will be arriving soon. Often seen together with golden plover on the machair. A good place to see one is Loch Stiapabhat.

Excellent article by @ellamcsweeney.bsky.social in run-up to #Budget2027

Nature restoration is a low-cost way to tackle problems the State is paying to fix. Healthy wetlands, rivers & coastal habitats can help buffer flooding, drought & storms.

Ireland is the last stand for rare coastal machair habitats in the EU – but it’s failing
Funding nature restoration looks like an easy line to leave blank in the budget. That would be an expensive mistake

The machair lands of the #OuterHebrides is where the annual explosion of flora and fauna occurs. Miraculous lands that bloom with shades of white, yellow and pink throughout the summer period. See it for yourself #summer2027 #daylightwanderertours daylightwanderer.com #isleoflewis

An #Otwituary for Scottish crime novelist #PeterMay

The isles are full of bodies,
weighted down in dark lochans
or buried under lush machair.
The heart is a blackhouse, and
there is blood to be written of.

I’m very sad about the death of best-selling author Peter May at 74. I grew friendly with him in recent 20 years and he was a true lad o’ pairts. His books were excellent and he also co-created Gaelic soap “Machair”, championed libraries and loathed Brexit! www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/lifestyle...
Interview: Author Peter May on making first-ever Gaelic soap opera, Machair, while dealing with 'most appalling weather imaginable' in Western Isles
The writer will be in Inverness and Stornoway next month, but has a stark warning about the failure to tackle climate change.

South Uist…it’s a hell of a hike (long way) but you’ll see sea eagles on an empty beach and hundred of birds on the Machair. Also go to St Abbs Head for the geology.

Western Isles - possibly Berneray* - some years ago. Some of the most amazing beaches anywhere, frequently backed, as here, by the wildflowers of the machair. #scotland #TidesOutTuesday

The Buff-breasted Sand was still trotting about on the machair at Allasdale this afternoon, though looking slightly dishevelled in the persistent driving rain. Seems one of the local Lapwings has taken a dislike to it and repeatedly tried to chase it off. #birdingscotland

12 Great Yellow Bumblebees recorded in 1 hour on the machair at Hough, Tiree on Sunday (13th) was the rather late peak count of the year here. Almost all were males (some very bleached) in a mixed summer for them due to prolonged wet spells after a promising start @bumblebeetrust.bsky.social

Today's poem was written in a bar on Mull after finding a whale skeleton on the same day of Machair Bay paulglover.uk/2026/09/17/p...
Post 187 … Upon Finding the Skeleton of a Whale on an Islay Beach
While on Islay we walked on Machair Bay’s remote beach. It was supposed to be a gentle walk after previous days excursions, but the showery wind blew hard at us. The strand was a moving carpe…

Intinneach, a bheil am facal ‘magh’ ceangailte ri ‘machair’?
(‘cognate’ sa Bheurla - with machair just being a more specific coastal land plain?)

Tha tòrr ainmean-àite ann an Èirinn le ‘magher…’ ach tha e bho ’machair’!

After years of searching, trudging over the machair, beaches and headlands, delighted to find a mobile and flighty Buff-breasted Sandpiper on Vatersay this morning; the first record for the island and my first self-found too. Well worth getting rained on for! #birdingscotland

I don’t know yet what a machair is, but I barked at the seals today. (I’ll look it up.)

Every day should contain a pleasure
as simple as walking on the machair
or singing to the seals.
