#Machairodus
Today's four random works of palaeoart:

Wayne Barlowe's Erlikosaurus, Mark Hallett's Euparkeria, Vasily Vatagin's Machairodus, and Tuomas Koivurinne's Rubeosaurus!

And here they are individually so I can get the written descriptions to fit in the alt-text.

But the real stars of the predatory show in the Wastes are the several species of Machairodus cats. Here, two take down a Hipparion. They are rare to the east where Amphicyon (the bear-dogs) reign supreme. 5/7

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Homotherium

In 1826, Reverend John MacEnery found Pleistocene aged canine teeth in a cave near Devon.

In 1846, Richard Owen described those first fossils as Machairodus latidens,

In 1890, while reviewing the material, Emilio Fabrini proposed the name Homotherium, a subgenus of Machairodus.

Between 1918 and 1976 several more species of Homotherium were named

In 2014, a review recognized only one species of Homotherium in Eurasia, synonymizing the rest.

I saw a homotherium serum fossil today so, as soon as possible, I went to Wikipedia to find out why it was named that. It seemed peculiar. According to Wikipedia, there is no explanation.

OH is the Machairodus design in When the Earth was Green based on Strata?

I had a feeling the behavior was but I'm just realizing she's also a woody brown with a pattern.

One interesting thing about these is that there's a lot of "fakes", or rather, using mammal teeth and slapping them onto Cretaceous matrix. Namely the surprisingly theropod-like canines of saber-toothed cats like Machairodus.

An indeterminate tyrannosaurid tooth from an old South Korean collection, possibly a Qianzhousaurus sinensis or some other large tyrannosaur from the Nanxiong Formation in China based on the matrix.

Though this does make me wonder if the first North American terror birds competed with Epicyon, Barbourofelis, Nimravides, Huracan and co. (they did compete with Machairodus, which was dominant at the end of the Miocene, before replacing it as the superpredator once it went extinct)

For real! @korybing.bsky.social did some of my favorite art for that chapter. It's a little focus on when plants do funny and fun things to our brains, set back in the days of Machairodus.

Hypotheses are still being tested but it seems sabertooths grappled prey and then delivered a kill bite to the neck or belly, largely avoiding bone. As they fed, they used their incisors to scrape flesh https://academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/article/188/1/319/5581941?login=false

Atticus’s stubby tail garnered him the title of “House Smilodon.” Poppy’s got too much tail for all that; maybe he’s the House Machairodus?

** Starships in my universe use giant cats and dogs to fend off alien monsters. Even after preventative tech improves, it remains standard to have at least one aboard for defense & companionship. That's all I'm gonna say about that, for now. 😁 (mostly based off Machairodus lahayishupup)
