#tidepooling In October I finally saw my first Hedgpeth's sapsuckers (Elysia hedgpethi). These are not nudibranchs or seahares, but are sacoglossans! They are easily found on the algae Codium (aka dead mans fingers), which they eat. 🦑🦀

Fieldwork brings research questions to life! 💧 Thomas Hein joined Olena Bilous to wrap up a six-week MARITE experiment on how macrophyte-created microhabitats affect aquatic life. Using algae as indicators, the team explores river resilience under climate change. 🌿🔬

Important Buglife work- parasiticides. Evidence mostly from rivers.
Ponds may differ; additionally, when turbidity & macrophyte disturbance influence invert communities.
Dogs in ponds increase turbidity & disturb sediments ↓ plants & ∴invert habitat.
Likely chemical & physical disturbance.
A new report from wildlife charity Buglife reveals that pesticides from common flea and tick treatments are now widespread in rivers across Britain and may be contributing to major declines in freshwater invertebrates bit.ly/4b1Pu50

Importantly, environmental conditions (water quality, dissolved oxygen, macrophyte cover) remained relatively stable—pointing to catfish predation as the key driver, rather than broader ecosystem degradation.

#Ponds 1) what are the temporal responses of macrophyte richness patterns following pond restoration & creation? (2) do macrophyte communities become increasingly similar over time between restored & created ponds? (3) how does the conservation value of ponds change following restoration/creation?

Can't wait to continue my field work this summer on Macrophyte Attached Zebra Mussels (MAZM). Macrophytes, though often overlooked as a substrate, are capable of supporting dense mussel populations. Featured below: Myriophyllum spicatum (image 1) and Potamogeton robbinsii (image 2).

Fascinating analysis of a BIG lake macrophyte database! I'll be re-reading this one closely for its application to our complementary work in Michigan.
After analyzing 20+ years of aquatic plant surveys from lakes across Minnesota and Wisconsin (nearly 1 million sampling points!) MAISRC researchers identified clear patterns in which species are common, rare, and most likely to coexist with others. doi.org/10.1111/1365...
