Photosynthesizing *Phyllospadix* fronds! Surfgrass is an angiosperm that lives on rocky shores. The tiny bubbles are oxygen it is producing & releasing into the tide pool. #MarineLife

It’s World Seagrass Day! 💚🌱🌊

Three species of seagrass can be found in the Salish Sea: Eelgrass (Zostera marina), Japanese eelgrass (Zostera japonica) and surf grass (Phyllospadix sp.).

With the help of multiple team members, we were able to replant more phyllospadix in one of our new boxes! I know it’s a plant, but Instill think it counts for #phycologyfriday.

Plocamium pacificum from San Francisco for #phycologyfriday. It’s a little battered this time of year, but this species makes beautiful pressings. In southern CA, it’s commonly associated with #surfgrass, Phyllospadix torreyi.

An intertidal bed of the kelp Eisenia arborea near Big Beach, Ucluelet. This species has a stronghold in California and scattered populations in British Columbia. It is interesting to speculate how this has arisen. #phycologyfriday #eisenia #eiseniaarborea #kelp #phycology #seaweed #marinebiology

Took spouse for mother's day morning beach walk and picnic.
Worked on my favorite sport of advanced beach napping.
Abundant flotsam and jetsam seaweed rack gave my sweetie some cyanotype inspiration.
Lots of mole crabs and winged forager nibbling on them.

🌊 The surfgrass Phyllospadix torreyi, a keystone species of the North Pacific, now has a chromosome-level genome. Scientists describe a massive Y chromosome in males, shedding light on sex chromosome evolution in marine plants.

Omg yes!! There's a species that feeds on phyllospadix rhizomes, but they're often mingling with Eubranchus slugs on sertularella (or other hydroids at the base of surf grass) idk if they eat the hydroids or slug eggs. That's my best Intertider Spider advice.

Wait till they find out that that seagrass thatch won’t be woven until 2200 CE.
