It commemorates a remarkable event in the Buddha’s lifetime when 1,250 enlightened monks gathered spontaneously at Veluvana (the Bamboo Grove) in Rajagaha to hear the Buddha deliver the “Ovada Patimokkha,” the core teaching of Buddhism: 1. Abstain from all evil 2. Cultivate wholesome deeds 3. Purify the mind เหตุการณ์นี้ถือเป็นวันแห่งความพร้อมเพรียงด้วยองค์ประกอบอัศจรรย์ 4 ประการ คือ พระอรหันต์มาประชุมโดยมิได้นัดหมาย, ล้วนเป็นเอหิภิกขุอุปสัมปทา, เป็นพระอรหันต์ผู้ได้อภิญญา 6 และเกิดขึ้นในวันเพ็ญเดือนมาฆะ จึงถือเป็นวันสำคัญที่ชาวพุทธทั่วโลกร่วมกันทำบุญ ฟังธรรม เจริญภาวนา และเวียนเทียนเพื่อระลึกถึงพระรัตนตรัย This event is known for its four miraculous factors: the spontaneous gathering without prior appointment, all monks ordained directly by the Buddha, all were arahants endowed with higher knowledge, and the assembly took place on the full moon of the Magha month.
