The species name points to the Maghreb, the Arabic name for north-west Africa, meaning roughly the west or where the sun sets. It’s a fitting choice, because al-Maghrib is also Morocco’s own name in Arabic.

The species was described in 1972 by Schlitter and Setzer, from the Taounate area on the southern slopes of the Rif mountains. They originally called it Dipodillus maghrebi. In 1983, Lay moved it into the genus Gerbillus, and both names are still in use today.

I always wondered about the name as a kid, because it doesn't sound remotely like a Sicilian word. But it comes from "sfenj" the Maghrebi name for the same pastries.

Nice pic. FYI: So, I spent $55 on a Lyft out to an airport hotel to meet a sweet Maghrebi staying here before flying back to Germany (why...ugh!). Cute, hairy, total bottom. He tried to sound like it was his first time being f--d. I said, kapara, this is your first time THIS WEEK. 😘 😂
