I always wondered about the name as a kid, because it doesn't sound remotely like a Sicilian word. But it comes from "sfenj" the Maghrebi name for the same pastries.

Fascinating. I've never seen someone try to gaslight a whole linguistic population about the meaning of their own language. Levantine, Maghrebi, Modern Standard, basically everybody who speaks Arabic has chimed in to say "No, that's exactly what those words mean." Truly impressive.

and not even all jews are treated equally there. it is a jewish supremacist state with a white supremacist racial hierarchy (see the treatment of mizrahi jews, ethiopian jews, and maghrebi-sephardic jews)
Been thinking a lot about the intense pushback from Israel-supporting American Jews on the idea that Israel in its current form is a Jewish-supremacist state. This way of reframing the concept of “a Jewish homeland” makes a lot of passive Zionists very uncomfortable and it’s worth pressing in on.

OK so tens of thousands of people are going to die again and it’ll be blamed on Maghrebi people for existing or something instead of God forbid investing in AC infrastructure because that would be American and also suffocate you

No other country in the world does immigration enforcement like this. The closest is the cruelty displayed against Maghrebi refugees coming across the Med in boats after the Arab Sping, perhaps. But lawless Gestapo in the name of purging the foreigner is now an American hallmark. Until we remove it.

I did my research & put together a class on Maghrebis in France & Quebec. I'm still traumatised at learning that in '61 Paris police under former Nazi collaborator police chief Maurice Papon murdered ~300 Maghrebi protestors, many by tying their hands & throwing them into the Seine.
