The idea that "Nazis like Wagner" (never really true) let people conjure a fantasy of sophisticated but monstrous high-culture fascists. But no, Curzio Malaparte made that stuff up to save his own neck, and there was that cool clockwork guy in Hellboy, but real fascists are hooting chuds.
That's because the anti-intellectualism of the populists and Far Right is in direct contradiction to the basic foundations of any civilisation

holding my breath for our current crop of fascists to create anything as enduringly insane and cool as Casa Malaparte

“We see every day the proliferation of Malaparte-types: unscrupulous, self-serving dissemblers, who will sacrifice any vestige of principle for a day spent in power’s cold sun.”
The Perfect Fascist | Defector
Curzio Malaparte was the shape-shifting Zelig of the catastrophe of Italian fascism, a political and social operator of such profound equivocation that in his writings he seems almost to convince even...

Sliwa joins the ranks of Malaparte and Mishima in that (total, irreversible) defeat makes them tolerable, and their ability to play themselves as characters makes them charming. I still wouldn't turn my back on him.
It's funny that Curtis Sliwa went from being a fringe lunatic to the most respectable and sane Republican in the country by staying as crazy as he was 15 years ago
Sliwa getting a flu shot: This could be very embarrassing. I’m supposed to be a tough guy, right?

Mamdani: I can hold your hand.

Sliwa: What happens if I faint?

Mamdani: I got you.

Doctor: You’re in great hands, literally.
