Nice! Coincidentally, the Islay whisky distilleries are featuring on the TV right now. Plenty of them. But there's a lot more to malt than just making whisky. First farmers, first maltsters! Origins of grain agriculture and all that sort of thing. See:

Finally got decent enough weather (apart from the wind) and dry enough roads to chance the bike for the first time since my accident in August. Fucking hard work, but 16.5 miles in just over an hour isn’t too bad, considering.

The whisky distillers get a mention and credit but not the maltsters. This is just an observation, not a complaint, obviously. But hey, there would be no whisky without malted grain and the wash. So Is malt invisible? Or just mostly obscure and generally unrecognised?

The whisky was crafted from barley that he grew on his land, specifically, Plumage Archer, which is a nice touch. I wonder whether it was floor malted because that's the sort of thing I wonder about. 🤔 Does anyone know? I would be rather interested to find out.

No. Probably not. The question is not "Bread or Beer?". It should be "who were the first maltsters?" or "when was malting discovered?" Because you need to learn how to make malt and malt sugars before you can make beer or ale from the grain. Sugars ferment into alcohol. Starch does not. Simple.
