#Maltsters
Without being facetious, I wonder if the closure of California's Admiral Maltings is a canary in the coal mine for craft malt? With COGS rising for breweries, margins are tighter, and beer sales continue to struggle. Will more maltsters follow suit or stay the course? brewpublic.com/beer-news/ad...

If making flour and bread from grain came first, then when, where and how, was malting and making malt sugars from grain discovered? The question is not just 'bread or beer'.

We should ask who were the first maltsters? Its a simple process, it's not complicated.

Lovely to see such enthusiasm for floor malting technology and maltsters!

Not been Warminster Maltings yet. I've been to Fawcetts Maltings. I went to learn from the maltsters when I started my research on malt back in 1998.

Floor malting: an ancient technology going back thousands of years. #malt
Had an incredible time visiting Warminster Maltings today, where 100% of its malt is floor malted, with production dating back to 1855. Bucket list stuff for me, this.

Prairie farmers are known for world-class malt barley, & maltsters like Gambrinus, Rahr and Makers who are turning that barley into gold.

Ten years old, my article for Brewer and Distiller International is the story of malt and malting.

I think of malt, malting and making malt sugars for fermentation (brewing & distilling) as a craft that includes skills and technology, all explained by science.

I saw a metal thing on display in Manitowoc, Wisc., and thought it was a bomb. Turns out it’s a K-ball roaster. For 100 years it was used by a company called Briess Industries to roast malt for beer and food. The company this year is celebrating its 150th.

Related to using American hops, we are also using all American/PNW sourced grains. Our Pilsner malt is from Skagit valley malting, our vienna malt is from Great Western. Crystal, and chocolate malts and flaked corn are all American varietals and maltsters as well.
