Zevachim has two big problems: the subject matter is genuinely difficult, and it (and nearby masechtos) was published from lower quality manuscripts than most of the standard Talmud text and the corrections based on better versions were only published as footnotes etc in the coming centuries...

“Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?”

Words uttered by Henry II of England that, while not expressed as an order, led to the assassination of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1170.

When she says "formulaic" this is not an exaggeration of the genre. Romance novel publishers take *applications*, not manuscripts, and authors are handed a plot for them to fill in the blanks. It's not about quality in romance publishing; it's about volume.
What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!

To say nothing of manuscripts referring to full figures without mentioning the individual panels that are relevant at a given point. I mean, I then go ahead and try and work out what the whole figure means, only to then have the manuscript talk about it in detail paragraphs later. Why?
October 1, 2026 at 11:07 AM
I know nobody likes a Bsky rant, but here goes. There's a recent stream of manuscripts I'm reviewing that seem to randomly refer to figure panels. It makes it so difficult to follow a paper. One constantly thinks, did I miss something? What do all the intervening panels show? Please do not do this!

Getting these requests is really REALLY difficult for someone who needs the work (freelancing ain’t for the weak!). I won’t edit manuscripts built in any way with AI, but where do I draw the line with doing layout/formatting?

It’s the same line.
