ManyBabies 3: A Multi‐Lab Study of Infant Algebraic Rule Learning
The ability to learn and apply rules lies at the heart of cognition. In a seminal study, Marcus et al. (1999) reported that 7-month-old infants learned abstract rules over syllable sequences and were...

New paper 🍼📄 ManyBabies 3 is out (open access, registered report in Developmental Science). 30 labs, 33 languages, 839 infants set out to replicate a textbook finding: 7-month-olds learn abstract rules from speech (@garymarcus.bsky.social et al., 1999). We didn’t find it. 🧵

New ManyBabies publication!

Over 10+ years and 5,000+ babies tested, we've learned a ton about how to study the developing mind. In this comment, we discuss three such lessons that are shaping the future of ManyBabies. We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Three ManyBabies projects - big collaborative replications of infancy phenomena - wrapped up this year. The first paper came out this fall. I thought I'd take this chance to comment on what I make of the non-replication result. 🧵

Had a great time joining Deon and Jenny to chat about some recent ManyBabies projects!
New episode! In it, we chat with Dr. Martin Zettersten (mzettersten.bsky.social) about a cool ManyBabies project assessing the reliability of infant directed speech! We also chat about his journey & his transition from postdoc to an assistant professor, among other things!

Meta-analytic plot below: only 1 out of the 31 samples find evidence of the effect. Huge effort from the entire ManyBabies 3 team led by @ingmarvisser.bsky.social. Imo an important moment for reflection in infant research (esp. language development) given the centrality of this finding. 2/2
