#ManyBabies
An enormous study of 650 babies refutes a classic 1999 finding about rule-learning in infants onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
This is the ManyBabies3 study; read about ManyBabies, ManyDogs, and many other multi-lab replication studies in our feature www.nature.com/articles/d41...
ManyBabies 3: A Multi‐Lab Study of Infant Algebraic Rule Learning
The ability to learn and apply rules lies at the heart of cognition. In a seminal study, Marcus et al. (1999) reported that 7-month-old infants learned abstract rules over syllable sequences and were...

Meta-analytic plot below: only 1 out of the 31 samples find evidence of the effect. Huge effort from the entire ManyBabies 3 team led by @ingmarvisser.bsky.social. Imo an important moment for reflection in infant research (esp. language development) given the centrality of this finding. 2/2

ManyBabies 3 is a large, cross-linguistic conceptual replication: 650 analysed infants, ages 5–12 months, 33 primary languages, mono- & multilingual, across 3 paradigms (headturn, central fixation, eye-tracking). Stimuli phonologically balanced across languages. 3/

New paper 🍼📄 ManyBabies 3 is out (open access, registered report in Developmental Science). 30 labs, 33 languages, 839 infants set out to replicate a textbook finding: 7-month-olds learn abstract rules from speech (@garymarcus.bsky.social et al., 1999). We didn’t find it. 🧵

New mini perspective zooming out on some takeaways from the first four ManyBabies projects!
New ManyBabies publication!

Over 10+ years and 5,000+ babies tested, we've learned a ton about how to study the developing mind. In this comment, we discuss three such lessons that are shaping the future of ManyBabies. We'd love to hear your thoughts!

For example, for ManyBabies 1 ("Do babies prefer infant-directed speech vs. adult-directed speech?"), they tested >2K babies with 149 authors from 16 countries. The hypothesis could be confirmed - but there was also a methods effect and lots of variability through age and language.

Top tier journals often require within manuscript replication (e.g., Dev Psych). Then there is the ManyBabies project from focusing on well powered replication studies. Finally, the Open Science Framework making data available for replication. Talk to your mentor and good luck with your research!
