DMSI is going international! So thrilled to be working with the wonderful people at IMC Leeds, the University of Leeds Library, and of course my wonderful @digitalmedievalist.bsky.social colleague @nkivilcimyavuz.bsky.social. Watch this space for the listing of workshops - they are really cool!
We have exciting news for #medievalSky! The Digital Medieval Studies Institute is coming to the International Medieval Congress @imc-leeds.bsky.social! The first UK edition of #DMSI will take place on 11 July 2025 Friday as part of #IMC2025! Details to be announced later this week!

In 1683, #camels took part in the Ottoman siege of Vienna. In this military map of the Saxon artillery chief captain Daniel Suttinger (1640-1689) the fleeing of the Turkish troops and their camels are shown. #maphistory #skystorians

To sum up, #maphistory does have a chapter about folded and only partly digitized maps. Our digital processes of preservation should be better, folks.

It is worth noting what else made it to these maps: the territories of Indigenous Peoples - Choctaw, Creek, Apalachee and others.

How barbaric? In the seventeenth-century, European maps still had "BARBARIA" as a part of Africa in them. Barbaria derives from the Arabic term, bilad al-Barbar (land of the Barbar) and was a term contemporarily used mainly for Coastal Northeastern Horn of Africa. 🦁 #earlymodern #maphistory

And with that, the AMAZING folks at the BAV have HD-digitized all *14* of their Sfera manuscripts! Here's BAV Borg. Lat. 539, f. 7v (elemental spheres): an unassuming MS, but one of my favorites. #bestcollaboratorsever #sferaproject

#sferaproject snippet: On Monday I was in the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice, which has *3* copies of La sfera. This one (MS Ital. 6307, here f4r) was mostly uncolored but the drawings were lovely!

Oh hey! Lovely seeing my book in the shop of the National Maritime Museum, near those of friends Michael Barritt and @meganbar.bsky.social (among others). The book is not new but delighted to encounter it in the wild in the UK for the first time. #maphistory #seacharts

Hear ye! Hear ye! TEAM #SferaProject just submitted the MS of our gorgeous, super-illustrated, side-by-side It/Eng translation of Dati's _La sfera_, coming from Italica Press in 2025! (This is one cover image option. Srsly, the images are FAB.)

A fascinating feel-good read this Friday.

Featuring four generations of the Guinness family, and the happy conclusion, "Black Sash [a human rights organisation] was able to disband in 1994 with Nelson Mandela’s release from prison", courtesy of our Maps dept.

A 500-year-old map known as “America’s Birth Certificate” was found a century ago. But what, and where, was “America”?

The label is often wielded now to exclude brown people, but these two continents have been a melting pot since long before the U.S. was founded.
