Getting into the fun parts of procedurally generated mapmaking. This week's video is all about urban geography, hierarchies of places, and how to assign populations to cities.

Getting started on place name generation! We want to procedurally generate names that reflect the geography of the places we're naming. I tweaked the code while working on this video, and at one point every placename started with "blood", but that's fixed now. #fantasy #ttrpg #worldbuilding #maps

In this week's video, we talk about iterating through many eras of history to layer on deep lore with interesting storytelling potential. I also can't make up my mind about how to pronounce "ruin". Sorry about that. #worldbuilding #ttrpg #fantasymaps

There's this 1864 photo of Aden. I didn't want to post this since it's very low resolution.

If able, make sure to shovel out storm drains so storm water has somewhere to go. Also, hydrants in case of emergencies. Find the catch basins near you here: https://www.bwsc.org/environment-education/maproom/catch-basins-map

New video out! This one is about how place names change over time, so they accurately reflect a history of a settlement being e.g. cursed or holy or ruined. Really pleased with how this is coming along. #fantasy #ttrpg #worldbuilding youtu.be/Kq2LNNgYn9U

In this week's video, I get into the process of labelling features like mountains and islands. This is one of those steps that's going to make things way smoother further down the line for this project. Looking forward to hearing what people think of this! #fantasymaps #worldbuilding #ttrpg

We're finally back at it! Generating political borders that looked halfway reasonable took way too long. I think this turned out pretty well, though. #worldbuilding #ttrpg #fantasy #maps

The Map Room’s social media footprint isn’t what it used to be, but it maintains presences on the following benighted services:

Got another video out! This one is about biomes but also K-means clustering and the worldbuilding iceberg. Also from here on out we're switching to social geography so it's all cities and polities and trade routes and stuff, which I'm really excited about. #fantasy #maps #ttrpg

Made a video to try to describe what I'm doing here with the map generation. I've never done any video editing (or video recording) before, and so this took about times as long to make as the underlying terrain generation code. Anyway, I'd be really grateful for any feedback on this.

New video out! This one is all about placing settlements on the map. Some new algorithm design in here that I'm really excited about. Things are looking a lot more lively now that we can start seeing where the cities would go. #worldbuilding #ttrpg #fantasy #maps

Took a beer break at maproom and remembered to look for hotels in Ypres for our trip to see kattenstoen festival . Lucky I did as there are like only 3 rooms left open that weekend in the whole city.
