Your text editor might have a markdown extension/plug-in which would let you syntax highlight and write in markdown with keyboard commands for the syntax. Otherwise, try out github.com/MarkEdit-app... as a free alternative or ia.net/writer as a paid alternative.

I was looking for a lighter weight markdown editor for quick opening/editing and came across github.com/MarkEdit-... which is nice, has a solid philosophy behind it (keep it small and simple) and the curated plugin list is just enough to feel good to me.

- when I click the numbered list button and it auto gives me the list entries as type.... Me: "Awesome!"
- when I don't click the numbered list button and it decides my numbers should be a list.... Me: "I hope you die"
