Martinsell Hill, Wiltshire. The stunning eastern scarp, dropping 130m down from the 32-acre Iron Age hillfort. You can clearly see the "pit holes" marking the hillside. Incredible landscape!

Martinsell Hill (289m) rising sharply above the Vale of Pewsey in Wiltshire. It's plateau features a hillfort and carries the Mid Wilts Way, and drops to the West via the Giant's Grave ridge to Oare.

#Martinsell / Giants Grave photographed from the north near Oare Hill, looking broadly South across the #Pewsey Vale for #HillfortsWednesday. One of the best places in the whole world imho

The massive 32 acre hillfort on Martinsell Hill, dating from 600 BC. It was apparently known for strange, Palm Sunday fairs until 1860, where local youngsters threw oranges and sledded down the steep escarpments on horse jawbones!

A sunny Sunday drew me back to Martinsell Hill in Wiltshire. ☀️

But, unlike on my previous visit (doh!), I knew to continue walking along the ridge to reach the promontory hillfort of Giant's Grave with its distinctive long barrow.

Celebrating the small victories in life! 😆

Preposterous conditions in the ground, preposterous conditions in the air. Got to my highest altitude in Britain, 6750 feet. 55 km from Martinsell on the Marlborough Downs to somewhere in Gloucestershire.

I walked through a field below Martinsell Hill, late afternoon, and was stopped in my tracks by six Red Kites all swooping hedge-high over the field, hunting.

A bird with a remarkable redemption arc, the Red Kites are here to stay.

Me (on the orange wing) climbing with Craig Atwell at Martinsell yesterday. I lost the thermal at 2,000 feet, and had to land; he kept on climbing and spent a couple of hours cruising over the Marlborough downs. Not a rare occurrence!

Hundreds from Avebury and surrounding villages would gather on Silbury Hill on Palm Sunday or 'Fig Sunday' as it was called, while Roundway Hill and Martinsell Hill in Wiltshire also attracted crowds then. Likewise, crowds would gather at Pontesford Hill in Shropshire for Palm Sunday festivities.
