On #DiaDeLosMuertos the UFW wants to honor the martyrs of La Causa who gave us the most precious gift they possess - their very lives. Nan, Nagi, Juan, Rufino, & Rene are very special human beings. We will never let the sacrifice they have made for us be forgotten.

So they sent a last minute request to attend and were politely told there was no capacity and will now hang themselves from the cross as martyrs.

While I understand the sentiment, please understand, the language in that image is vague on purpose. Renee and Alex are white US citizen martyrs but Victor Manuel Diaz was our neighbor too. Deported, tortured, interned people: also neighbors. Countless ruined lives. We mourn all of them.

That really got me, and then the one-two punch of “whiskered martyrs” and the realization that there’s no reason for martyrs (or VPs) to be pluralized knocked me flat.
