Them & Us; Cambridge 1901. #MatchMap

‘Town Vs Gown’ is mentioned in our text, but it’s not the only faultline in the city; there’s the classic Rich Vs Poor, & the scholastic Oxbridge rivalry of course, but also the collegiate competition played out in sports & courts across the city & country.

From Cherry seeds, great trees grow – to bend a saying into something resembling a football!
#MatchMap - Boscombe & Pokesdown 1908.

You may wonder why our sample is a gravel pit & some football pitches! The ‘gravel pit’ became home, soon after 1908, to AFC Bournemouth, and still is!

#MatchMap Wembley Part 1; Wembley Park 1896.

Our three Wembley maps span 40 yrs, & the changes to the area in such a short time is seismic.

From gentle pleasure gardens to a centrepiece of empiric entertainment surrounded by housing of varying grades, the transformation we'll see is breath-taking!

An added bonus with this map is the contemporary street directory, adding colour and depth to the streets on this sheet. And of course a rich list of names and professions to look over!

“Life is more fun if you play games” – My Uncle Oswald.

We’re reposting our Central Cardiff 1916 map today as a #MatchMap, and to kick off Roald Dahl’s birthday weekend!

These streets would have been familiar to the young boy who would grow up to become a world-renowned author and WW2 flying ace!

Journeymen - West Croydon & Selhurst 1911.
Once the proud home of Crystal Palace before they moved on to the cosy and storied Selhurst Park (being 6ft tall, Andrew found the seats a little too cosy when he visited!).
Oliver Harris’ introduction is a vibrant history, and well worth a read.

This map hints at what might have been; a #London Eiffel Tower!

We include, alongside our reproduced map and specially written essay by Wembley Historical Society’s Geoffrey Hewlett, designs of several proposed towers, a street directory and contemporary adverts related to the park.

#MatchMap; The Oval & Kennington Park 1871-93.

It's the start of the ICC Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup, and we celebrate with a beautiful #London map; a mesmerising pattern of straight streets & graceful rounded parks, gasometers & sporting institutions- once again the OS created art from accuracy!

#Coventry 1905
Our sample today shows the very earliest years of the storied Coventry City FC ground - Highfield Road - used 1899-2005! It had one of the biggest playing surfaces in England, and was the English league’s first all-seater stadium.

I heard a good question today, does any #football club have more purpose built home grounds that are still active than #Everton?

Anfield is a hand-me-down (😉), Goodison a WSL stadium and the fine Bramley Moore Dock is the current/new home.

As a cheeky aside, we sell many maps containing stadia 😁

This publication isn’t just about PNE; it’s also about transport, industry, history and the people who called Fulwood & Deepdale and #Preston home for centuries.

For the price of a pint you can hold history in your hand, or gift it to a Football/History/Georgraphy/etc loving loved one!

Making a stand: Preston North End, Fulwood & Deepdale 1929.
Incredibly, the football club that the term ‘storied’ might've been invented for had been playing here for over 50 years by the time this map came out.
Here spectators cheered the first ever league and cup double & more besides!

#MatchMap - South London 1893 – #Wimbledon, 2 weeks to go!

Our small scale inch-to-the-mile maps are particularly beautiful, both aesthetically and intellectually. Here we raise ourselves up beyond the clouds, part them, and look down on Britain laid out below like a... well like a really big map!

#MatchMap Wembley Part 2 - Wembley 1912.

Change marches across our map on iron rails; a powerful second railway line has appeared, the ‘Wembley Park’ of 1896 is now a golf course with no half-built tower, & more homes are appearing at the edges.

#MatchMap Wembley Part 3; Wembley 1935.

#England V Croatia in the World Cup today; here’s our last Wembley map to celebrate!
This is the one we’ve been waiting for – the glorious stadium is here! Looking back at our previous maps, you can really see the titanic changes since the turn of the 20thC.

We also have an interesting digression into #MatchMap territory with a brief history of FC Schlake 04, a discussion on the significant mining and geographic importance of the area, and a view into what the visitor can see today; all in all a great introduction to a fascinating series!
#CombatCartography; Gladbeck & Buer 1944.

As noted in Alan Godfrey's introduction, this series was produced by the British War Office in #WWII to aid Allied occupation planning. These maps are an incredible moment in time; a mix of what remained and what was lost, & a focus on possible futures.
