7 + 6. One kid counts on. One doubles 6 and adds 1. One makes 10. All get 13. So which strategy fits best? That question builds more number sense than any timed test ever will. 🧠 #MathTalk #FactFluency

Quick math talk upgrade 🗣️

Don't end the discussion when the talking stops. Ask kids to look back: Did I listen? Did I explain WHY? Did I build on a friend's idea?
Kids who reflect on their talk get better at it. That's metacognition in action.

Love this idea of numbers that are "on the way to" other numbers ❤️ #MathTalk #TMWYK
Crispin the crow, our nursery puppet, lays 3 eggs, ready to
hatch in 18 days.

A child makes a calendar ‘with numbers to cross off’ whilst he waits:

“I think 18 is 8 and 1”

“18 is smaller than 80 ‘cus it’s on the way to 20 which is ‘ten ten’”

“10 is on the way to 80 but it’s a long way to wait”

Inspired by @jennalaib.bsky.social and the amazing presentation at #SUM2025 in Sask, I created a slow reveal graph. Can't wait to "reveal" at our upcoming math focus group meeting!

Question from the 7yr old:

Are there types of math questions where the answer is another math question?

We said yes, and he wanted examples, so I tried to explain a little of what I remember from Gr12 calculus, but I’m sure there are better answers out there on #edusky #mathtalk #mathsky

“I wrote this book because I had to.”

Omo Moses began THE WHITE PERIL with a personal sense of duty. It ties him, his father Bob Moses, and his great-grandfather together under a common mission. @katekilla.bsky.social

THE WHITE PERIL may be a memoir, but Omo Moses says it’s also a biography of Bob Moses’s life. His hope is that the book presents his father to his family, to the upcoming generations, and to the future.

Omo Moses named his memoir after the book his great-grandfather wrote. Published in 1919, it helped him understand more about the life and work of his father, Bob Moses.

Omo Moses had to write his family memoir THE WHITE PERIL because he discovered his voice in his high-school English teacher’s class. Memories of growing up in Africa emerged in free-writing exercises, and classmates listened.

Written as a family memoir, Omo Moses’s THE WHITE PERIL is about family, both in the sense of loving bonds between parents, children, and siblings and also in the sense of the wider family working together for justice and equality. @katekilla.bsky.social

Omo Moses’s memoir THE WHITE PERIL is many stories in one. A father-son story. A coming-of-age story. An epic road-trip story. All of them touch on what it means to become Black in the US.

Here’s a fun low floor/high ceiling #mathtalk activity I’ve been working on in #TileFarm: What’s next? At the low floor I could see a simple qualitative description. At the high ceiling I could see a function describing the perimeter to tiles ratio for the nth-term of the sequence.

What is the Reconstruction Conjecture?

The deck of a graph G is the multiset consisting of all unlabelled subgraphs obtained from G by deleting a vertex in all possible ways (counted according to multiplicity).
