Goods, oil transporters’ strike threatens industry, exports
KARACHI: Goods carriers remain parked in Mauripur on Saturday, disrupting cargo movement to and from the city’s ports.—Online • Movement of over 400,000 goods-carrying vehicles suspended • Transporters refuse to end strike before talks with govt KARACHI: A countrywide strike by goods transporters and oil tankers started affecting industrial and export supply chains on Saturday, with operators vowing to continue the protest until the outcome of talks with the government on Monday, while manufacturers warned that prolonged disruption could halt production and jeopardise export commitments. Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance Chairman Nisar Hussain Jafry told Dawn that “our countrywide strike will continue as our leadership intends to meet the ministers concerned with petroleum, transport and ports on Monday”. He said the movement of more than 400,000 goods-carrying vehicles, ranging from small to large, had been suspended from Saturday until the outcome of Monday’s meeting. “We have already unloaded our containers at the ports,” he said. Mr Jafry said goods transporters were striking over multiple issues, including the government’s recently introduced daily fuel price mechanism. “We are dissatisfied with the daily fuel price fixation introduced by the government, which is only creating problems,” he said. Since intercity movement of vehicles takes between one and three days, transporters and industries cannot make firm commitments on transportation charges because of daily changes in fuel prices, he said. Mr Jafry urged the government to restore the monthly fuel price mechanism and reduce withholding tax on transporters to 2pc from 7pc, noting that oil carriers were paying 2pc withholding tax on services. He said the government and goods transporters had signed a charter of demands in December 2025, but the commitments made under it had yet to be fulfilled. Mr Jafry also complained about the number of toll plazas, saying they had been established at intervals of around 30km and that transporters were perturbed over high toll rates. Transporters were also facing issues related to parking of heavy vehicles in areas surrounding the ports and driving licences, he added. Supply-chain disruption Already struggling with high production costs, industrialists warned that the nationwide strike by goods transporters could further disrupt industrial activity if supplies of raw materials remained suspended. They cautioned that prolonged disruption in cargo movement could paralyse factories, derail production schedules and jeopardise export commitments, ultimately affecting employment and the overall economy. SITE Association of Industry President Abdul Rehman Fudda said the strike had created an alarming situation for manufacturers. “The entire production system depends on timely supply of raw materials and delivery of finished goods. If factories fail to receive essential inputs, production will stall, while delays in dispatching finished products will worsen financial stress for industries,” he said. The export sector was already grappling with multiple challenges, Mr Fudda said, warning that if export consignments failed to reach buyers on time because of the transporters’ strike, industries could face penalties, price cuts or claims for damages. He urged the government to intervene urgently and resolve the dispute through negotiations with goods transporters. “Authorities must act before the situation escalates to the point where the country’s industry and supply chain collapse entirely. If the strike prolongs, the damage will extend beyond manufacturers — affecting exports, jobs and overall economic activity,” he said. Mr Fudda also called for immediate relief measures for the industrial sector, warning that rising production costs, expensive energy and policy uncertainty were putting the survival of industries at serious risk. He said escalating electricity and gas tariffs, rising production costs, high financing expenses and the absence of consistent economic policies had significantly undermined industrial activity. Despite these challenges, he said, the business community continued to keep the wheels of the economy moving, adding that further neglect of the industrial sector would be against the country’s economic interests. He called on the government to ensure energy supplies at competitive tariffs, simplify the tax regime, expedite payment of pending refunds, improve the ease of doing business and introduce investor-friendly policies. Emergency in place as heavy rain lashes parts of Karachi
KARACHI: Heavy rain lashed parts of the city on Thursday afternoon, as a westerly wave approached the metropolis, prompting authorities to declare an emergency. Karachiites in various areas witnessed light showers in the morning, with Saddar and I.I. Chundrigar receiving heavy falls shortly after 2pm. A PMD official even said a hailstorm was reported from Mauripur. In the morning, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded rainfall in various areas, including Quaidabad, Malir and surrounding areas, as well as PAF Faisal Base and Jinnah Terminal, earlier this morning. Light rain has also been recorded in Gulshan-i-Maymar and surrounding areas, with spells of heavy rain reported in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Saddar, Clifton, Garden and Keamari. According to rainfall figures issued by the PMD as of 11am, Bahria Town received the highest amount of rain (20.5 millimetres). This was followed by Surjani Town (12.6mm), University Road (8.2mm), Gulshan-i-Maymar (7.2mm), Jinnah Terminal (6.2mm), Keamari (6mm), Old Area Airport (5.6mm), DHA Phase II (5mm), Mauripur (3mm), Shahrah-i-Faisal (0.4mm), and Gulshan-i-Hadeed (traces). Weather radar imagery from around 10am showed a heavy downpour over the northern parts of the city, along with isolated hail. In a weather advisory for Karachi Division, the PMD forecast cloudy weather with “intermittent rain/wind-thunderstorm with few moderate to isolated heavy falls” for today. The maximum temperature was likely to remain between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels ranging between 60-83 per cent during the day. On Friday, Karachi Division is expected to see partly cloudy weather with “chances of light rain/drizzle”, with mostly sunny skies forecasted on Saturday, when mercury can hit 30-32°C during the day. According to a statement issued by his office, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) staff to remain alert. “Besides the deployed staff, rapid response teams have also been formed. If further needed, staff will be dispatched to the relevant locations,” the mayor was quoted as saying. A statement issued by the KMC spokesperson said the authority’s staff would remain stationed at eight nullahs and 12 choking points to monitor the situation. A K-Electric spokesperson, in a statement, said: “As a safety measure, power supply may be temporarily suspended in some areas; it is restored after rain subsides and clearance from field teams [has been received].” The KE official advised citizens to maintain a safe distance from TV/internet cables, broken wires and electricity installations. > ## Rain emergency declared in Karachi A rain emergency has been declared in Karachi in view of the rain situation. Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi said the city administration has activated measures to deal with the rainfall, adding that citizens could contact the rescue helpline at 1299 for any complaints or assistance. The staff of relevant institutions has been deployed under the supervision of assistant commissioners, he added. He said that the staff of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) and the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), town administrations, and necessary machinery and vehicles were active, and work to drain accumulated water from the roads was underway. “They will perform relief work and grievance redressal duties, including helping in water drainage traffic problems,” he said. To deal with the rainfall, all deputy commissioners have been directed to remain alert, and concerned officers to stay in the field. In addition, rain emergency help desks and camps have been established in various districts and subdivisions at the instructions of the commissioner. In District East, help desks had been established at Nipa Chowrangi, National Stadium, Exhibition Chowrangi, Samama Chowk, Madras Chowk, Safoora Chowrangi and Sohrab Goth. In District South, help desks had been established at MA Jinnah Road, Shaheen Complex Chowk, KMT Main Office, Town Administration Lyari Office, Chakiwara and other areas. In District Keamari, they were placed in Baldia Town Office, the Keamari DC’s office, Truck Stand Mauripur and Gulberg Interchange Site. In District Central, water pumps had been deployed at Ayesha Manzil and other places in the Gulberg sub-division, while arrangements were being made for more. ## Sindh government cautions citizens, makes advance arrangements The Sindh government appealed to citizens to exercise caution during rainy weather. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that, in view of the rains, advance arrangements have been made and the leaves of essential staff have been cancelled. Additional de-watering pumps have been installed for the timely drainage of rainwater from low-lying areas, he said, while drainage chokepoints at various locations in the city have already been identified. Staff have been deployed to monitor these chokepoints, he added. > “The officers of the relevant provincial government institutions and local government institutions have been instructed to remain in the field on high alert,” he added. Memon asked citizens to follow precautionary measures and contact the relevant institutions immediately in case of an emergency. Separately, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) established rain emergency centres in all its regional offices including in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Larkana, adding they would remain in place till April 8. According to a handout issued by the Sindh information ministry, Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah said SBCA officers will remain in the field and ensure the monitoring of dilapidated buildings. In the statement, SCBA Director General Muzamil Hussain Halepoto urged residents to vacate weak and old buildings, and to avoid going near under-construction structures. Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Alam Odho also directed police control rooms to remain on high alert, adding that full contact should be maintained with rescue agencies to deal with emergency situations.

Road accidents involving heavy vehicles claim three lives in Karachi
KARACHI: Reckless and negligent driving claimed the lives of three people in as many fatal accidents on Saturday, according to police and rescue services officials. According to a statement from the Karachi Traffic Police, a trailer driver was involved in “negligent and careless driving” when he hit a motorcycle on Mauripur Road, injuring its two passengers. An Edhi Foundation spokesperson said they were taken to Civil Hospital Karachi, where one of them died. South Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Syed Asad Raza told _Dawn_ that, according to the initial probe, the fatal accident was caused by over-speeding, which led the motorcycle to slip and the trailer’s rear wheels to crush the teenage rider. He said the driver was arrested and the trailer seized by Mauripur police. In another incident, a motorcyclist was killed when a trailer hit him on the main Super Highway near the Toll Plaza, according to a statement from an Edhi Foundation spokesperson. Gadap City Station House Officer Sarfraz Jatoi confirmed the incident, adding that the injured motorcyclist was taken to a private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said 17-year-old victim sustained crush injuries to his skull and face during the Mauripur accident. She added that the body of the Super Highway accident victim was brought to a hospital in the evening for legal formalities. In a third incident, DIG Raza said the front left-side tyre of a water tanker burst around 8:15pm near Habib Chowrangi on Star Mill Road in the Site Area. As a result, a motorcyclist, an unidentified man aged around 25 to 30, came under the vehicle’s wheels and was killed on the spot. The DIG said the body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for completion of legal formalities, and further legal proceedings were under way in accordance with the law. The latest deaths come against the backdrop of a worrying increase in fatal road accidents involving heavy vehicles, particularly water tankers and dumpers, across Karachi. Last week, a young motorcyclist was killed and his pillion rider injured by a trailer truck driver near Bara Board, PAF Gate, in Mauripur. The week before that, a first-year college student and a 12-year-old boy lost their lives in separate incidents after being hit by water tankers in different parts of the city, triggering renewed concerns over reckless driving, poor enforcement of traffic laws and the unchecked movement of heavy vehicles in densely populated areas. Last month, angered citizens also set a dumper truck on fire in Karachi after it met with an accident, _resulting in the death of_a man. His wife was injured in the incident.

Residents block Karachi’s Mauripur Road against anti-encroachment operation
KARACHI: At least three residents of the Younisabad area were taken into custody when they blocked the Mauripur Road and put up resistance against an anti-encroachment operation launched by the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the KPT said that the operation at Younisabad was launched under the supervision of Pakistan Rangers, Sindh. DIG-South Syed Asad Raza told _Dawn_ that police and district administration were not informed about the action. He said area residents pelted KPT administration and law enforcers with stones and blocked the main Mauripur Road. He said that three suspects were briefly detained. > KPT claims to have retrieved seven acres in Younisabad A Rangers spokesperson told _Dawn_ that the paramilitary force had been taking part in the anti-encroachment drive on the directives of the federal government. He said the prime minister had directed all law enforcement agencies, including Rangers, to ‘facilitate’ the KPT to get their 1,100 acres of encroached lands vacated. “The KPT conducted the operation on illegally encroached land and did not disturb the allottees of Younisabad. The fishermen, who were allotted land in 1993, were not disturbed,” the spokesperson said, adding that during the operation, “a recovery of seven acres illegally encroached by land mafia has been made”. The spokesperson clarified that the operation was carried out against two land grabbers, who cut mangroves and reclaimed land from the sea to set up illegal housing schemes. “In the last two and a half months, about 80 acres of prime land worth Rs 60 billion has been recovered,” he claimed. **MNA condemns action** Pakistan Peoples Party MNA from the area Abdul Qadir Patel condemned the action against the residents including women. In a statement, he said that he contacted the KPT chairman and Karachi commissioner and asked them to call a meeting to this effect immediately. He said any action without giving a legal notice to the residents would be deemed as “illegal”. He added that local administration should be taken into confidence prior to such an operation. “The KPT should get its land vacated but people should not be displaced from their homes,” he said. _Published in Dawn, March 20th, 2025_
