In the Han Dynasty (202 BC–220 AD), the yearning for immortality shaped art and burial. At Mawangdui, painted lacquer coffins swirl with clouds and strange beasts: symbols of ascent, spirit, and eternal journey.

Walken would certainly use the Mawangdui mss. -- no punctuation

As you can see over at wikisource, the Mawangdui texts are almost entirely devoid of punctuation.

it is a comforting thing to know that you participated in this ceremony- a ceremony from the deepest strata of chinese culture, recognisable to Qu Yuan, to Qin Shuhuang, to the occupants of the Mawangdui Tombs, to Zhu Xi-

My grandfather is now an ancestor, like them

Take, say, the Daodejing, written in Classical Chinese.

Among the oldest surviving copies of the Daodejing are the Mawangdui texts, which would have been prepared at a time when the Classical language the text is written in was still relatively close to the spoken vernacular.

I’m learning two moving qigong systems right now, and I’m frankly mad that my body seems to prefer the “medical” one from 1979 rather than the one that dates back to 1150 and could plausibly be said to derive from forms in the Mawangdui silk text daoyin diagrams (~150 BCE)

Hebei, c. 1938–1939. Lindsay Collection. Gymnastics became compulsory in girls’ primary schools under the 1907 late-Qing education reforms. Chinese gym exercises have older roots: illustrations survive from a Mawangdui tomb sealed in 168 BC, over 2,000 years ago.

When archaeologists escavated Han-era tomb Nr. 1 at Mawangdui 馬王堆 (near Changsha), they found the remains of a more than 2000-year old soup in a tripod. Look at those lotus roots, they look like freshly sliced!

It seems likely that the figures were dressed in real clothing, much like this (smaller) steward figure from the Han tombs at Mawangdui. No arms or clothing survive at Yangling, but then it is hard to imagine the soldiers and servants going into the earth as armless nudes. (25/n)

I'd like to start reading the Dào Dé Jīng (The Way and its Power) next. This is only a PSA, because my books (like the DDJ translations) are in boxes. We're reflooring my library (study). I'm open to advice while I read online sources.

The earliest version of Tao Te Ching is the silk book of Mawangdui in the Han Dynasty and the Chu bamboo slips of Guodian in the Warring States Period. The words above are completely different from the popular version that has been tampered by Confucianists for thousands of years.
