Anna Lisa Beck traced sharks and shark products through early Chinese sources. She discussed the challenges of working with 爾雅 and 說文解字 and of trying to pinpoint place names. In her research, especially 潘國 became „a place of weird fish.“ #EarlyChina #Etymology

My talk is done! It traced how commentarial interpolation modifies the reading, even in subtly, thus setting paradigms of interpretation. Even #ZhuXi 朱熹 (1130-1200) still picks up on Zheng Xuan's 鄭玄 glosses. #chinesehistory #earlychina #commentary #chineseclassics #confucianism #historyofphilosophy
