#Maximortal
this went live yesterday - the centerpiece is a massive essay about Star Trek, Akira, and the Transformers, called “Three Weeks in September.” it’s ready to be perused by you right this very moment, and filled to the brim with perceptive yet iconoclastic hot takes such as these:

Written by Rick Veitch? Wild. I read his Maximortal, Brat Pack, and Swamp Thing books.

As for Veitch's Maximortal (part of the King Hell Heroica), the book is a metatextual alternate origin that weaves together DC's treatment of Siegel & Shuster and the death of George Reeves with the development of the atom bomb and the advent of media capitalism, just to begin with.

Veitch deserves more credit for his superhero comics, particularly among that group of 'elevated' Superman writers that includes Alan Moore and Grant Morrison, where he really belongs. Maximortal should definitely be on your shelves if you've already got All-Star Superman and Supreme sitting there.

The recent Swamp Thing '89 series reminded me that Rick Veitch is responsible for three of the best Superman stories ever written, even though none of them actually happened inside a Superman-helmed title...

i mean since we're talking Deep Cuts here, rick veitch (bratpack, the maximortal) never did get enough press and it seems ever more relevant to our era

@denizcamp.bsky.social hello deniz, wanted to ask you, is the plot of the fifth issue of 20th Century Men inspired by Maximortal? Or is it based on some legend or story? Keep up the good work btw loved the first issue of both ACE and AMM!

Rick Veitch’s Boy Maximortal is part of his King Heroica epic but it reads well as a standalone book. Drugs, underground comix, a fictional version of 50’s-60’s Marvel, J. Edgar Hoover, Carl Yung, meta-narratives about reality and fiction. This book fucks.

You want Yungian dream comics: Rare Bit Fiends! You want Carl Yung in a comic book: Boy Maximortal!
Rick Veitch sure knows his Yung

The Maximortal comics do what Flex Mentallo did with a meta-narrative about comic books as an art form and how they influence the readers as well as the creatives, and in a way that doesn’t require pages of fan-made annotations to make sense of the book. I love Flex Mentallo, but it’s a tough read

You know, the Maximortal is sort like if Phillip Jose Farmer wrote one of his biographies about Superman.

Rick Veitch is one of the greats. If he had a larger Big Two career, we would absolutely be talking about Brat Pack, The One and The Maximortal as the best superhero deconstructions.

Oh, and Rick Veitch's Maximortal

I give Rick Veitch shit for being a 9/11 Truther (and I will continue to do so), but I was reminded that he is a pretty good Kirby imitator, especially in 1963.
Were stuff like the Big One and the Maximortal similar in that regard?

The Maximortal is arguably one of my fave superhero deconstructions because it is *not* refuting the *idea or values* of Superman and superheroes, but rather the exploitation *of* them under capitalistic greed.

It's the same reason I like Maximortal - that doesn't directly deconstruct the genre of superheroes or the character of Superman, but does a metacommentary about the reality behind Supes' creation and how Siegel and Shuster and how they were fucked over. But it ends up reconstructing the idea of-

Probably the closest I will get to a proper "crossover" for this fanfic project is adapting an idea Moore had for his (never to be) third year of Supreme: Supreme, Miracleman, True-Man (from The Maximortal), Captain Marvel and Superman going on a metaphysical journey to discover the "source-
Realizing the setup afforded by 1963's Alternity provides ample opportunity for crossover stuff, which is my usual bread-and-butter...buuut I wanna limit the Awesomeverse stuff to Image primarily.

It has been waaaaay too long since I read it (possibly not since last century), but it’s absolutely fantastic. I remember liking the Maximortal too.
