A repost of Ichthyosaurus somersetensis for #FossilFriday and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. One of many unique and scientifically important specimens at risk now that the museum is closing. I sincerely hope that the collections are preserved of nothing else.
Ichthyosaurus somersetensis, a recently defined species of Ichthyosaurus, a fish like reptile that somewhat resembles a dolphin, approximately 2.5 meters long, still in strata. This was a fast moving predator that ate what it could catch and likewise had to avoid much larger predators. Fossil is dated to the early Jurassic, approximately 200 million years ago.

The date is September 11, 2026. The location is North Carolina State University. Description for the workshop: Science teachers are invited to an interactive, one-day professional learning workshop hosted by the National Center for Science Education. Teaching climate change can be challenging: the science is complex, students often enter the classroom with misconceptions, and they continue to encounter climate misinformation outside of school. This workshop will provide teachers with practical, research-informed tools and support for navigating these challenges. Teachers will experience classroom activities from NCSE’s Climate Change in Your Backyard Story Short and DataWISE resources and leave with free, classroom-ready materials they can use with their students.
