Damn that's fucking shitty as hell.

I wish I was smarter with history because I get so easily lost on timescales, even in bioanth I struggle with even EPOCHS severely. I really hope it gets easier as I go.

That's to say I wish I was as smart as you are with that, you seem well read

I've always wanted to add an ability/disability unit to my Intro to BioAnth class. I wonder if Helen Keller Trutherism would be a good hook for that? I've been tending more toward the eugenicist tech bros who are hyping autism as a super power.

Reading this, we live in a deeply weird world.

Researchers just found chimps are less likely to steal from their friends. In some trials, good chimp pals refused to engage with the experiment at all.

The new work reveals novel norms around fairness and friendship in our hairy ape cousins.

yeah inclusion criteria are finicky, but I guess my point is that publication approaches and standards in bioanth are fundamentally different from those that apply to, say, Dana's new paper on tetrapod necks.

FWIW hominins is a whole different discipline though (bioanth) and that honestly should be considered separately.

Just browsing 2026 in Nature, there are 2 stem tet papers, 4 mammal papers, 3 dino/bird papers, 1 early amniote paper, 1 snake paper, 3 fish papers, 7 invert papers, and a handful of bioanth papers. No taxonomic acts in the stem tet and early amniote papers though.

Well, we all started our choices off with whether we were natural brachiators or clingers-and-leapers, with additional reference to our apparent pre-coffee speed - vaguely remember BioAnth was first thing Mondays? Good singing voices always lean towards gibbonhood, of course. 😀

Anyway I showed my bone drawings to my prof before the exam and she said I should submit them for the extra credit drawing slot and also what if you stayed an extra semester just to take osteology in the spring LOL which I told my boss who was like “I’ll give you osteology materials” (she’s bioanth)
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately but it takes so long) the best way to learn anatomy is to draw it 💀 🩻✍️

I spend a bunch of time on the history of race “science” in my intro to BioAnth class. I always explain to the students I am doing so because these theories are like cockroaches. No matter how thoroughly squashed (cringe - I didn’t see where that metaphor was going) they keep popping back up.

Henrich treats bioanth as the healthy foil, counting statistics as rigor.

He should have had Claude plot the distribution of p-values in the top bioanth journals over the past 4 decades.

Shrinking faculty numbers contribute, but can't fully explain why huge swaths of bioanth silently resist reform
Spent yesterday working on a detailed critique of some of the "methods" that Joseph Henrich used in his recently released report attacking sociocultural anthropology. He was the sole anthropologist involved with the Vanderbilt Report. It's long, but the more I looked the more issues I noticed.

But instead of exploding I'm gonna go talk about Neanderthals to my intro to bioanth class.

sometimes i think bioanth is my weakest subject but then i start doing linguistic analysis and like dude i love linguistics but it might just be more confusing to grasp concepts more than memorizing evolution

I’m reading an article about the evolution of menopause (by Lynette Sievert, in the Yearbook of Bio Anth, 2024, for the Bioanth nerds), and I have to laugh at the point where she mentions that periodically, a new generation “discovers” menopause and thinks it’s “new”.
