Personally, I think that the internet has had a negative impact on democracy for a few reasons, two main ones. The first being how easy it is to flip the script and spread false information about both parties: the 2nd being the inability to respectfully debate someone today

Payola is alive and well in the music industry, seen in botted/paid for plays, likes, and followers, a cut in revenue in exchange for more exposure like labels requesting songs be placed in popular playlists, and the original pay for play we knew payola as initially on the radio. #Media180Friday1000

Surveillance Capitalism is a violation of an individual's right to privacy, as it takes an individual's personal information to create a profit for the company. By taking personal information, companies do so without the individual's consent, which is not justifiable at all.

Topic: The Internet
I believe the internet has strengthened American democracy by giving people a voice. Anyone with a phone can now organize, share their views, and be heard, as movements like Black Lives Matter have shown. The internet gives ordinary people real power.

I believe surveillance capitalism is a huge violation of individual privacy. Once information about you has been collected, it can potentially remain in databases or shared amongst other organizations. The information could include purchasing habits, location or interests. #Media180Friday1000

Surveillance capitalism feels like a bad deal to me, honestly. We get free apps, sure, but companies quietly collect our searches, location, and daily habits, then sell that info for profit or feed us with ads. I don't think convenience should cost us our privacy like this. #Media180Friday1000

Topic 2: I think local music scenes are still possible today but they look different than before. People usually made music on CD and local shows. Today people can discover new artists online(social media). Streaming has made it easier for local musicians to share their music. #Media180Friday1000

I believe payola still exists in today’s music industry, but it has changed forms. Instead of paying radio stations, artists and labels can pay for more exposure through streaming playlists and social media. This can make success depend on money and not talent. #Media180Friday1000

I think the Internet requires more regulation and that sites should have some accountability for content posted on them. Ideally, no effect is had on free speech if we agree that unnecessarily hateful speech doesn't count as "free" speech, thus leaving only cordial conversations. #Media180Friday1000

I believe surveillance capitalism violates our privacy because it feels like our every move is being monitored. After talking to my friend about her loan forgiveness program, I suddenly received mail and calls about the same exact services, even though I never searched for them. #Media180Friday1000

Surveillance capitalism is absolutely a violation of individual rights. Capitalism has already created inequities between class, gender, race etc. It is the modern reflection of wage labor, or even slave labor, since they have the same goal as surveillance capitalism, profit. #Media180Friday1000

2: I think genres of music have lost some form of living in communities but it's the people who keep it grounded.Streaming has become easy access for all music to go anywhere since it's not physical anymore but the global access to music let's people embrace it anywhere. #Media180Friday1000

Surveillance capitalism shouldn’t be considered justifiable as a way for corporations to generate profit off of the individual such as collection of data off of the individual’s interactions through the website and not allow for a person to proceed until they accept the terms.

I believe that the Internet has had a positive impact on democracy because, as a mass medium, it has allowed new candidates who otherwise would not have the marketing funds of well-established candidates to advertise their platforms and ideas. Ex. Mamdani in NYC's mayoral race. #Media180Friday1000

I think the Internet has had a mostly negative effect on democracy because misinformation can spread quickly and influence people's opinions such as with voting. It can create confusion about political issues and make it harder for voters to make informed decisions. #Media180Friday1000

I agree that today music industry changed form and now you can stream playlist and social media by money and not rhetoric talent. #Media180Friday1000

I agree completely. An example is that one of my teachers in high school is actually in an indie rock band. Even though most music is now online on platforms like Spotify, indie bands like the one my teacher was in, can still exist. #Media180Friday1000

I think with how music scenes are typically popularized it makes it difficult for new ones to pop into the spotlight now but streaming makes it easier for people to learn about new and old music genres/scenes so I wouldn’t say that it can’t thrive now compared to the past.
October 2, 2026 at 2:47 PM
@isabellahorvath.bsky.social Music scenes can still thrive, but not really local. With the production of physical music and underground sound, they had to buy in-person. With streaming, consumers just need to find the right corner of the internet. #Media180Friday1000

I personally think that surveillance capitalism is fine if they handled it correctly, in that the data is kept safe and we know the purpose and what they are collecting from us. This isn't the case however as many tend to hide agreements in long TOS and data breaches are common. #Media180Friday1000

I agree with you on how local music are still possible today cause on how social media like the online article made it very easy for local musicians to share their music.

The internet was both a positive and negative impact to the democracy. Which gives people a more access to the information and to say there opinion. But also they could misinform the public which can cause a big division in the public. So it impact depending on how you use it.

I agree with you, that with the internet it is easier now to slander and lie about opposite parties. But it is also easier now to be heard individually and to show support for your side. #Media180Friday1000

I do agree, but it could be debated whether or not an established candidate such as Mamdani could not have been able to advertise or garner support for their political party. Maybe without the internet, there would be less hate against these established candidates. #Media180Friday1000

I agree, and it is also only a huge gap between the working class, and the bourgeoisie. They will collect information from the poor, to exploit the poor. It reflects the poor human autonomy within capitalism. The only people whose data are not being collected are the rich. #Media180Friday1000
