The internet has a positive effect on democracy as it makes it easier for people to share opinions, access information and lets politicians directly connect with voters. Mamdani used social media as a tool to gain attraction for his mayoral campaign and earned mass publicity. #Media180Friday1000

I think surveillance capitalism is a problem because companies collect a lot of our personal information without us really knowing how it is being used. Making money is fine, but our privacy should matter too. #Media180Friday1000

I slightly agree because although I don't like surveillance capitalism, I think the impact it makes on the convenience and lure of many modern appliances and apps is underestimated when compared to the hatred for the invasion of privacy, but it still should be tightly controlled.

I am against surveillance capitalism. An example of this can be seen with Flock cameras and the company as they prioritize profit over regulation and ethics. There have been instances where flock cameras have been proven to use biometric recognition, raising privacy concerns.

The issue with section 230 is that it was passed before algorithm feeds existed. Platforms amplify content for profit, so they should share responsibility for the harm it causes. Reforms, like liability for posted content, can protect free speech while ending blanket immunity. #Media180Friday1000

I both agree and disagree that it's harder for new music scenes to pop up, because while it's true that many scenes aren't spotlighted as older ones have, they still are very popular based off of the fanbase. For example, vocaloid is quite big, yet at the same time seen as niche. #Media180Friday1000

I think surveillance capitalism is a violation of privacy because companies collect so much information about what we search, buy, and watch online. Even if it helps them make money through ads, people should have more control over how their personal data is being used. #Media180Friday1000

Section 230 made interactive computer services not liable for anything published by a third party. The Act shouldn’t be abolished but needs regulation. Like a mom’s job to her kid when they do wrong. You shouldn’t be able to yell fire & get away with it, even online; REAL FOS🤏🏼🤏🏼

Local scenes aren’t dead. Before, labels and radio DJS gatekept music. Now streaming lets anyone find any scene instantly, so sounds develop faster and spread wider. Local roots may fade, though these scenes grew from real places, so clubs and shared style still matter. #Media180Friday1000

I believe payola still persists, but it has evolved beyond just radio. Labels can promote exposure through streaming playlists, social media campaigns, etc. Therefore, these practices can still shape which artists and songs gain attention and popularity.

I agree completely. An example is that one of my teachers in high school is actually in an indie rock band. Even though most music is now online on platforms like Spotify, indie bands like the one my teacher was in, can still exist. #Media180Friday1000

I agree with you, that with the internet it is easier now to slander and lie about opposite parties. But it is also easier now to be heard individually and to show support for your side. #Media180Friday1000

I personally think that surveillance capitalism is fine if they handled it correctly, in that the data is kept safe and we know the purpose and what they are collecting from us. This isn't the case however as many tend to hide agreements in long TOS and data breaches are common. #Media180Friday1000

@isabellahorvath.bsky.social Music scenes can still thrive, but not really local. With the production of physical music and underground sound, they had to buy in-person. With streaming, consumers just need to find the right corner of the internet. #Media180Friday1000

I agree, and it is also only a huge gap between the working class, and the bourgeoisie. They will collect information from the poor, to exploit the poor. It reflects the poor human autonomy within capitalism. The only people whose data are not being collected are the rich. #Media180Friday1000

I do agree, but it could be debated whether or not an established candidate such as Mamdani could not have been able to advertise or garner support for their political party. Maybe without the internet, there would be less hate against these established candidates. #Media180Friday1000

Surveillance capitalism is absolutely a violation of individual rights. Capitalism has already created inequities between class, gender, race etc. It is the modern reflection of wage labor, or even slave labor, since they have the same goal as surveillance capitalism, profit. #Media180Friday1000

The internet was both a positive and negative impact to the democracy. Which gives people a more access to the information and to say there opinion. But also they could misinform the public which can cause a big division in the public. So it impact depending on how you use it.

I think with how music scenes are typically popularized it makes it difficult for new ones to pop into the spotlight now but streaming makes it easier for people to learn about new and old music genres/scenes so I wouldn’t say that it can’t thrive now compared to the past.

2: I think genres of music have lost some form of living in communities but it's the people who keep it grounded.Streaming has become easy access for all music to go anywhere since it's not physical anymore but the global access to music let's people embrace it anywhere. #Media180Friday1000

I think the Internet requires more regulation and that sites should have some accountability for content posted on them. Ideally, no effect is had on free speech if we agree that unnecessarily hateful speech doesn't count as "free" speech, thus leaving only cordial conversations. #Media180Friday1000
October 2, 2026 at 2:35 PM
I think the Internet has had a mostly negative effect on democracy because misinformation can spread quickly and influence people's opinions such as with voting. It can create confusion about political issues and make it harder for voters to make informed decisions. #Media180Friday1000

Surveillance capitalism feels like a bad deal to me, honestly. We get free apps, sure, but companies quietly collect our searches, location, and daily habits, then sell that info for profit or feed us with ads. I don't think convenience should cost us our privacy like this. #Media180Friday1000
