Jessica Kent-Hazledine, a 33-year-old mother from Cornwall, lost her vision shortly after giving birth to her first child, leaving her terrified she would never see her son grow up. Initially, she noticed vision loss in her left eye, which she attributed to fatigue, but soon experienced complete loss in her right eye as well. Following traditional treatments with limited results, she underwent a plasma exchange therapy through a new NHS Blood and Transplant service in the South West. The procedure involves removing a patient's plasma and replacing it with donor plasma, which helped prevent antibodies from attacking the protective layer around her eye nerve fibers. After five plasma exchanges, her vision improved significantly, with clear sight restored in her right eye and about 75% vision in her left eye. Kent-Hazledine described the experience as 'magic' and expressed gratitude to plasma donors, encouraging others to contribute. She was the first patient in Cornwall to access the NHSBT’s new therapeutic apheresis service, which collaborates with four hospitals in the region.
