Kamran Malik, a former mayoral candidate in London, has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison for orchestrating a complex fraud scheme involving an elderly woman's life insurance. The 59-year-old Muslim political leader posed as a solicitor through his firm KM Legal Ltd, deceiving Cydatty Bogie into arranging a deed of trust with her friend Cynthia Smart. After Smart's suicide in 2017, Malik manipulated the legal documents to divert £51,000 from Bogie's life insurance payout to his company account. He also siphoned over £12,000 in rent payments and attempted to sell a pensioner's £400,000 home while falsely claiming to be an attorney. Despite denying the charges, Malik was convicted of six counts of fraud and one count of money laundering between 2017 and 2020. The court heard how he exploited vulnerable individuals, including Bogie, who had previously run for West Ham MP. During his trial, prosecutors emphasized that Malik's actions constituted a 'sham' legal practice targeting the elderly. His previous criminal record includes a 2016 jail term for scamming migrants with bogus immigration advice and a 2018 conviction for financial fraud. The case highlights systemic vulnerabilities in legal trust frameworks and the exploitation of political connections to perpetrate financial crimes.
