Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller was the first African American psychiatrist, graduating in 1897 from BU. He studied dementia with Alois Alzheimer, translating much of his AD work into English. In the states, he studied several 🧠 conditions, like schizophrenia.

For about 1300 years, many in medicine relied on the studies and teachings of physician, surgeon, and philosopher Galen (born 129CE). Interestingly, Galen’s knowledge largely came from animals like pigs because human dissection was banned in Ancient Rome.

Skeletal remains were found in Italy (~1300y old) showing a “coffin birth”, expulsion of a fetus due to gas buildup during decomposition. The skull also showed trepanation, possibly to treat eclampsia/preeclampsia.

Vivien Theodore Thomas was a surgical laboratory supervisor and pioneer in the field of cardiovascular surgery, despite no professional education. He earned an honorary doctorate from Hopkins and was named an Instructor of Surgery.

Before penicillin, arsphenamine (Salvarsan) was the drug of choice. Developed by Paul Ehrlich + team, this arsenic derivative was…efficacious and problematic, as the drug was unstable and difficult to handle.

Dr. James McCune Smith was born into slavery in 1813 NYC and emancipated as a teen. He is believed to be the first African American medical doctor, but he was also an intellectual, an abolitionist, and spoke out against systemic racism in and out of medicine.

Pioneered in the 1960s, osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (aka tooth in eye surgery) because a 🦷 is removed from the patient or donor, a lamina is cut from it then a hole is drilled in and fitted with a lens. The lamina is grown in the patient’s cheek then implanted on the 👁️!

Countless people have ‘Father of the Blood Bank’ Dr. Charles Drew to thank for his contributions toward (1) developing new ways to store plasma for transfusions and (2) developing the first large-scale blood bank during WWII.

Pioneered by Walter Freeman, thousands of transorbital lobotomies were performed on people who were mentally ill or otherwise deemed to have undesirable characteristics. Freeman later treated it like an act, doing multiple procedures with no scrubs or sterile field.
