Yesterday, a new treatment approach was added to the Parkinson’s disease toolkit in the states. The FDA approved VYALEV (foscarbidopa and foslevodopa, AbbVie), a subcutaneous, 24-hr treatment via the VYAFUSER pump.

A study participant received ~100x the dose of an investigational product via IV infusion, was hospitalized, experienced multiple serious adverse events including cardiac arrest, and ultimately died.

Yesterday, the FDA approved the first nonsteroidal drug (‘Duvyzat’, givinostat) to treat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), in people 6+. DMD is a rare, neurological disorder which causes muscle deterioration, leading to breathing problems and early death.

Early 1700s: An enslaved man (given name Onesimus) explained to Cotton Mather (his owner) how he was inoculated against smallpox. After verifying and learning more, Mather tried to spread the word through Mass (wildly unpopular). The procedure was tested in 1721 and worked!

The FDA is notifying application holders for drugs containing carbidopa/levodopa (used for Parkinson’s) that FDA is requiring an additional warning to state the meds can cause B6 deficiency and B6 deficiency-associated seizures.

FDA just approved the first treatment for Niemann-Pick Disease, Type C, a rare genetic disorder resulting in neurological symptoms and organ dysfunction, due to changes in the NPC1 or NPC2 genes impacting transport of lipids in a cell. Life expectancy is about 13.

Got a cough? You might be prescribed benzonatate (Tessalon) pearls which work on vagal afferent fibers and stretch receptors to ⬇️ the cough reflex.

Be aware: Accidental ingestion by kids <10 can cause overdose and death. Symptoms can be rapid, within 15-20min of ingestion 🩺 🧪

Anna Louise James was one of the first Black women to become a licensed pharmacist in the US and first in Connecticut. She worked in her BIL’s pharmacy till he left for WWI in 1917 and ran the pharmacy for 50 years. She passed in 1977 at the age of 91.
