New #paleoart for #FossilFriday: the giant Meganeuropsis hawks Dunbaria in Early Permian Kansas, reaching to trap it with long, spiny legs. This image is set at the coast to reflect the marine occurrences of Meganeuropsis and Dunbaria fossils - not all Carbo-Permian insects lived in swamps! #sciart

My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

My life-size Meganeuropsis model (2017), a giant griffinfly from the Permian, USA. With a wingspan of 71cm, it was as big (if not bigger!) as the Carboniferous Meganeura.

Insects diversified rapidly during the Permian, bringing about the early ancestors of odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) as well as scorpionflies and beetles.

Fossil Friday! Finally completed my interpretation of Meganeuropsis permiana. It’s pretty much full size, but head is too big (not sure how this happened). Will probably use this in my classroom to amaze and delight my students. #meganeura #carboniferous #SciArt #PaleoArt #crochet

Result of the Wellington Formation #paleostream!
People like to think of the Carboniferous as the time of the giant insects but they actually reached their peak in the early Permian. And here in Kansas we find the largest: Meganeuropsis, which in our case in going after a...

Earth used to buzz with enormous insects, including dragonflies the size of falcons. Nothing like that exists anymore...and it turns out we don't know why.

A new study disputes the idea that modern oxygen levels are too low. So why are there no mega-flies? 🧪

How big are the giant, magical wasps that I'm currently writing in Cemetery Club? At least as big as this extinct griffenfly:

The largest insect ever was Meganeuropsis permiana, a dragonfly-like bug that existed in the Permian period, about 290 million years ago. This dude had a 2.5 foot wingspan! That's a big ass bug.

#Meganeuropsis 🦟 vs. Modern Insects 🐛✨

The largest #insect today, the #GiantWētā 🦗 of New Zealand, weighs about 70g (2.5 oz).

The widest wingspan belongs to the #WhiteWitchMoth 🦋 at 12 inches (30 cm)—still less than half of Meganeuropsis's massive 28-inch (71 cm) wingspan.😱

Explanation for why we don’t see two-foot-long dragonflies anymore fails: For millions of years, giant insects like Meganeuropsis permiana, with wingspans exceeding 70 centimeters, dominated the skies.
