Longhorn #bees (probably Melissodes druriellus) are back at Legacy Park for the fall. Males (like this one) seem to emerge a little earlier than females. These were on goldenrod but as more of the little white asters (symphyotrichum) comes into bloom they will shift over there.

I found this male long horned bee resting on a false sunflower on a cool morning. The male bees rest on blooms because they don't have a nest to return to. I think its a sunflower long horned bee specifically

Melissodes agilis?

Sent a message to a buddy who shares pollinator photos with me. Google says it’s a two-spotted longhorn bee. (Melissodes bimaculatus) Yours has collected plenty of pollen😊

Late summer is long-horned bee season, and we’re excited to see so many Melissodes species!

Look for them visiting asters, goldenrods, sunflowers, tarweeds, and other members of the Asteraceae family.

A longhorn bee (genus Melissodes, currently the most abundant pollinators in my Portland garden)

Why would getting home at 8:30pm stop me from starting a new Melissodes?

Update on my morning:
Was surveying one of my research benches of plants, saw a Melissodes agilis, and was SHOCKED at how tiny he was!!!!! What do you mean they are that small???
I just submitted this to some inat Melissodes people, we'll see how they roast me

These two species look a lot alike, are on sunflowers most of the time, AND are perfect angel teddy bears 🥹🥹🥹🥹

And I'm re-sharing this absolute unit of a Melissodes longhorn bee from last year for #MacroMonday. They're so fluffy! The teddy bear of #bees.

- Megachile (parallela, nevadensis, fidelis)
- Melissodes (lupinus, agilis, menuachus, microstictus, pallidisignatus)

You can pick up five of the six WA-native goldenrods from the Des Moines WA nursery (Sat-Mon 10-7) or shipped via the online store (NobodyNursery.square.site).

my favoritest bees ever, the flying teddybears (Melissodes spp) are out and I love them so I had this wild idea to add them to my growing pile of visual bee ID keys

This uhhhh may be a way bigger undertaking than I realized. What do mean mean ID hinges on the color of tiny hair on one abdomen band?

This is a busy morning in the pollinator garden. A Black Swallowtail, a fiery skipper, a metallic banded sweat bee, a carpenter bee, a longhorn bee, on the zinnias. My honey bees & bumble bee are preferring the giant hyssop.

Back yard today (day 2). Single shots on very active animals...part of the process is just standing with this massive camera, weaving back and forth as if in the wind, so that the bugs begin to accept you as part of the garden. And then desperately leaning in/back to get the focus right 😅 #bugsky
