Memorialists, transubstantiationists, and other

Some people just prefer their blood of Christ pasteurized before fermentation sets in.

The folks passing out the Welch's in the tiny plastic vials tend to be memorialists anyway.

from presbyterian to methodist to episcopal to lutheran. real presence is very much the thing liberals believe

memorialism is literally just a baptist/anabaptist thing. i’d wager there’s a hell of a lot more conservatives who are memorialists than liberals

IT WAS NEVER JUST ABOUT TRANS PEOPLE

Idaho has introduced a resolution to ask SCOTUS to REPEAL Obergefell and allow for states to make gay marriage ILLEGAL again.

We will NEVER go back.

this is such an obvious gotcha that I'm certain it's as annoying to our totally good faith intelligent thoughtful protestant homies as when memorialists ask us "was Christ literally a vine, too?" but like..............where is sola scriptura in scripture

but it's definitely really goofy when catholics act like there's some kind of "checkmate memorialists" verse lol

Regret to inform you that in this respect Trump has been trumped by Lincoln's memorialists.
December 27, 2025 at 12:59 PM
but it's easy to see how it got watered down over a few centuries to the worthless, empty ceremony that memorialists perform today

(which fits in quite naturally with credobaptism as some sort of individualist personal commitment)

I think about the HIttites sometimes. They were major but then didn’t have memorialists but their poetry is coming back to remind us of them. Make a statue it becomes a colossal wreck boundless and bare but make a POEM and your civilization may be remembered. news.uchicago.edu/story/how-30...

I found an 1813 smallpox vaccine petition for Culpeper County VA today and it’s so funny that there are bits about “the prejudices of the ignorant” and people “who as yet have no confidence in its efficacy”

Historic anti-vaxxers! 🤣🤣🤣

One city saw the largest turnout since November *1989.* (I wonder what was going on then?)

This happened in Banská Štiavnica.

We have everything from the memorialists to spiritual presence to real presence to transubstantiation
February 4, 2026 at 9:20 PM
In my experience, sometimes both reformed and Catholic understandings assume that the symbolic interpretation of memorialists is devoid of a spiritual reality (which I don't think is accurate).
March 26, 2026 at 12:52 AM
For many modern memorialists, there just isn't a need for the term "sacrament" because the assumption is that Christ is mystically present within the believer at ALL times, and the ordinance is about taking time to appreciate and recognize that reality.

Hmmm. Not sure that's any different in practice from the memorialism of my Southern Baptist youth. It was always accompanied by prayer and contemplation of the Cross (with an assumed spiritual benefit). Maybe we were bad memorialists, but it may also speak to the fuzziness of these hard categories.
March 26, 2026 at 12:13 AM
The extent to which modern Lutherans believe this varies, because it's been a while since the Reformation: there are Anglicans and Presbyterians who believe in sacramental union or even transubstantiation, and there are Lutherans who are memorialists and think it's just a symbol. The world is weird!

Nowadays memorialists use cool technology like lasers—but back in the day, they had to chisel tombstones by hand. That's why very old graves often only list the *years* someone lived rather than the full dates.

Davidson was one of the 1938 memorialists and a severe critic of the 1943 post-war reconstruction statement, both of which involved public clashes with Archbishop Mowll. They must have reconciled, though, as Mowll made Davidson an Honorary Canon of St Andrew's Cathedral in 1950.
