This just in:

His name shall be Menander, and you can call him And or Andy for short.

(He joined Sophocles "Sophie" and Aeschylus "Esk" on our staff a week ago Sunday and is still mostly hiding under the couch, but he gets more comfortable in his new home every day.)

As Menander. wrote in his Monosticha, 514.

“Debts make free men slaves.”

Yes, this is very standard. It’s the Trojan princess and priestess, Kassandra, who spurned Apollo and was cursed so that her prescience would never be believed. It must have had special meaning to the owner of the ring, but sometimes it’s just about a famous scene, well known in ancient art.

Question: can anyone recommend a 21st equivalent to Wodehouse or Menander in the light-comic-romance vein? Especially Australian.

I picked up a Wodehouse again recently and am thoroughly enjoying its lightness of touch.

Menander (c. 342/41–c. 290 BC): "no chaste woman ought to make her hair yellow". "What can we women do wise or brilliant, who sit with hair dyed yellow, outraging the character of gentlewomen, causing the overthrow of houses, the ruin of nuptials, and accusations on the part of children?"[77]

Everything is destroyed by its own particular vice: the destructive power resides within. Rust destroys iron, moths destroy clothes, the worm eats away the wood; but greatest of all evils is envy, impious habitant of corrupt souls, which ever was, is, and shall be a consuming disease.

~ Menander

Have you not read Roman history?
Yes! Their revolts were put down & their leaders executed but the spirit they brought to light did not go out but just dimmed then began to shine again when the age of enlightenment began.
You think you are not a slave the ancient Greek playwright Menander thought

Nb: “When Caesar made his fateful decision to cross the Rubicon river, he quoted a well-known line from the Greek playwright Menander. He shouted "ἀνερρίφθω κύβος" (Anerriphtho kybos), which translates to "Let the die be cast!". The Latin translation Alea iacta est became more famous later.”
