New paper alert!

During the 2021 Australian Mesophotic Coral Examination expedition to the Ashmore Reef Marine Park, researchers collected 10 new species of sea stars, 9 of which are described in the paper by @echinoblog.bsky.social et al., published in Megataxa in early January.

🌊 Corals’ Cool Refuge

A study finds shallow corals can acclimate to cooler, deeper mesophotic reefs, maintaining heat tolerance even in warming oceans.

These ecosystems offer hope as refuges against climate change.

Shallow corals acclimate to mesophotic depths while maintaining their heat tolerance against ongoing climate change
Global warming poses a significant threat to coral reefs. It has been assumed that mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs, 30 to 150 m depths) may serve as…

The beautiful Headband Butterflyfish (Chaetodon mitratus) is found in deep reefs of the tropical Indian Ocean. They can be seen in some places as shallow as 20m depth, but are most common around 60m. I photographed this one at about 70m depth in Zanzibar. #mesophotic #ichthyology
