This is the massive frustration I have with people these days: they simply refuse to recognize the metaconversation.
You can point out the people pushing the story are manipulative and have really clear public agendas, and the response is "yeah but here's what I think about the story."

It is so irritating how it's impossible for people to understand a metaconversation, to wit: knowing when you've been manipulated into focusing on a thing while ignoring the mechanisms that manipulated you even when they're made obvious.

Not Gaza, obv, but this particular response to being heckled in this way at this rally. Lots of digital ink will be spilled over whether the specific words she chose here or her tone were advantageous or disadvantageous, but like…I truly think little matters less than this metaconversation.

There is no reason that the “metaconversation” and “community” have to happen over the same protocol/app. Your metaconversation and community are on Discord, not the podcast app. There is additional friction, but many consider the tradeoff worth it.

Because group DMs aren’t valuable for the fact that they exist, they are valuable for metaconversation and community directly related to the platform in which they live. I have group DMs in text, twitter, instagram, and others and each is platform dependent and has its own use case
