did u know the idea of megastructure was formulated by the metabolists, an architecture group in japan in the 1960s, as a kind of technocratic vision of future city development that relied on a total base structure to be planned out, but that could build and grow and shrink itself from the inside.

The Metabolists saw buildings as organisms. I see organisms as buildings. Both are right. Both are wrong. The body is the first architecture. 🏗️🫀

while Tange was certainly involved with the metabolists, this is technically not metabolism as its not designed to change, adapt or be serviceable, its just JP post war modernism :)
still, an undeniably gorgeous piece of work by Tange and associates, I wish it had been built!

The clip-on, plug-in promise of #Archigram & the #Metabolists didn't degrade into the provisionality & disposability of #junkspace. It's been taken up by #MAGA. Witness its ability, a few years back, to whip up an armada of pleasure boats, or convoy of trucks. . .

"It could be described as Afrofuturist, though this was then an inchoate discourse. And yet it was also akin to the megastructural projects of the postwar Metabolists in Japan, particularly with its hint of modular construction, one tower being built on top of another."

Wandering a Cubist Dream — Odonis Odonis Reconstruct Reality in Their 3D-Animated Video for “Come Alive”
Today, Toronto's Odonis Odonis share the video for Come Alive from their forthcoming self-titled album, arriving November 15 via Royal Mountain Records.“Come Alive,” the band explains, “is a trip-hop/shoegaze track inspired by personal experience, capturing the moment of awakening and embracing change. The song and its video follow a character breaking out of a simulated world into a living, dynamic environment. Drawing on the Metabolists and visionary architects from Yona Friedman to Archigram, it transforms the built environment into a space that feels alive, immersive, and full of possibility. Our built environment is alive in itself.”
