🔎 We tested alternative rooting hypotheses (e.g., roots at Archaeplastida, Discoba, Metamonada) and found that none were as strongly supported as the Opimoda+/Diphoda+ root. The results hold across multiple models, even after controlling for biases. (5/)

Záhonová et al. tested whether hydrogenosomes and mitosomes in Metamonada originated from an independent endosymbiosis, finding instead that these organelles originated from an Alphaproteobacterium during a single common endosymbiosis.

Mutants of cell shape in Ciliophora provide clues to the variety of forms in protists. 1-Janus doublets vz the Metamonada double cell. 2-Multiplication of kinetids from 2 to 4 to 8, to many in hypermastigotes, opalinids. See Cell Shape review doi.org/10.1016/B978...

"Protozoa" currently doesn't have a unique definition; it's used by different people to mean different things. Some traditionalists (e.g. Cavalier-Smith) define Protozoa as a paraphyletic group containing major protist groups like Amoebozoa, SAR, Metamonada etc.
