#Metaprogression
due to reincarnation and karma, samsara is a rougelite with metaprogression
September 27, 2026 at 10:11 PM
it's technically a rouge*lite*, since there is metaprogression (e.g. buying a better vacuum cleaner)
is cleaning the apartment a roguelike

entropy is metaprogression
does updating your character's x, y, z coordinates count as metaprogression

triggers are just metaprogression. i won't elaborate

metaprogression across time loops, oh, that's Dead Cells

It seems that roguelite players view gambling, repetitiveness, masochism, wasting time, and arcade more favorably than roguelike fans, while roguelike concepts are more positive in roguelike reviews. Metaprogression and picking between three upgrades do not seem that cool.

the third most important thing is metaprogression

I'm workign on inventing a new kind of game, no pcg, no metaprogression, just a single playthrough *period* thats it, a game thats just one big totally hand designed playthrough, call it a norogue or something ikd

metaprogression

i'm suspicious of:
metaprogression*, skinner box antics

*there is a /lot/ of unconventional world state continuity between runs, which technically is a sort of metaprogression. but i'm designing in a way ethically opposed to "you unlocked the stabber +1 at your base camp" hades style hook.

i really hate the metaprogression psrt of roguelites. like, if i cant reasonably win on the first run then whats the point. sorta feels like you earned it less when you have +20% damage compared to last run

The review also notes that the demo, which I found pretty fun, started you off with multiple metaprogression upgrades already unlocked. I well and truly hate it here
Spoilers for Absolum, but you actually might want to spoil yourself on this, because this is some of the worst meta-progression bait I've ever heard of

(Also a great review overall, one that's for once made from the perspective who gave beat 'em ups a deeper shot)

getting back into shape only by convincing myself that lifting weights is metaprogression in the roguelite of life
September 22, 2026 at 7:27 AM
so let's do some interesting, ethical things instead. let's not use metaprogression at all. or let's deliberately use interesting, anti-entrapment metaprogression. let's break the stranglehold that idea has.

Always love booting up a new shmup and seeing metaprogression & insane defensive mechanics. That's exactly why I got into the genre to begin with, to tank hits & unlock shit!
February 19, 2026 at 1:23 PM
Metaprogression has long been my personal dividing line between roguelikes and roguelites

[person who keeps suggesting spiral knights successor voice] you know, it seems like the gaming ecosystem is ripe for a cooperative dungeoneering rpg with charming customisable characters and metaprogression between sessions

It’s funny when people talk about shmup/rpg hybrids and what they mean is builds, unlockables, metaprogression, some type of resource economy. To me ”rpg” has always meant characters, story, exploration, with maybe equipping some items now and then

The actual version is a really fun single player campaign with a cool mutating unit metaprogression gimmick but the overall plot and, as much as it pains me, Tricia Helfer's performance really hold it back

THEY HAD THE ORIGINAL ACTRESS IN THE STUDIO BUT THEY REPLACED HER LAST MINUTE. WHY??

Hi everyone, we are hard at work on our metaprogression systems in D.P.S: Weapons Testing Facility 2! Sharing more on it soon!

"Punish" as in "yeah you can't do metaprogression or get achievements while breaking the game cmon", sure

"Punish" as in "you can't use base-level systems at all", insane.

I worked with the irrepressible @jonremedios.bsky.social @tylermakesgames.bsky.social @rainysector.bsky.social @bravemule.bsky.social to write a paper on why permadeath (and other forms of loss in games) appeals, and what we lose when we try to paper over it with metaprogression. Check it out!
It's the Polaris 2025 reports! They've come! They're here! It's a bumper crop of five, count'em FIVE papers! We got comedy, we got death, we got cringe, we got trust... something for the whole team.

Piping hot game design knowledge and insight await:
