When genus deserves to be a family 🦠🔬

Recent phylogenomic analyses showed that the genus Methanobrevibacter is severely underclassified. We propose reclassifying it into a family, Methanobrevibacteraceae consisting of 11 genera.

New paper! We analyzed gut #microbiomes of 250+ individuals (ages 19–109).
#Centenarians often show a high-methanogen “human cow” phenotype 🐄, with #Methanobrevibacter smithii dominance and youth-like archaeal profiles. #Archaea may stabilize networks in aging.

"Mysterious ancient microorganisms known as archaea..."

does the general public deserve such clickbait? 𝗻𝗼. Archaea are understudied but in no way "mysterious". 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘪 is in not "ancient" but a contemporary archaeal species.
