ArmA is conserved in all PG-bearing methanogens and beautifully localizes at the division site. Our deletion mutant confirms that this enzyme is required for cell division, hydrolysing archaeal PG to complete cytokinesis and cell separation 6/9

While peptidoglycan (PG) is an essential and near-universal feature of Bacteria, it is largely absent in Archaea. A notable exception is a large clade of methane-producing archaea, which possess a cell wall with a distinct type of PG (also known as pseudomurein) 2/9

In 2023, we already reclassified Methanobrevibacter using genomes via #SeqCode. However, that reclassification is not valid under the current International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP). In our new IJSEM paper, we fixed this📄🔬

When genus deserves to be a family 🦠🔬

Recent phylogenomic analyses showed that the genus Methanobrevibacter is severely underclassified. We propose reclassifying it into a family, Methanobrevibacteraceae consisting of 11 genera.

Multi-omics and functional validation reveal that Methanobrevibacter-derived L-3-aminoisobutyrate alleviates subclinical mastitis in dairy goats via the HSPA1B-p65 signaling pathway - Microbiome
Background Subclinical mastitis (SCM) is prevalent in dairy livestock and compromises milk quality and lactation performance. Although often attributed to bacterial infection, many cases lack identifi...

Recently, we renamed this lineage as Methanovirga to highlight their exclusivity to the termite gut flagellates. Long evolution as endosymbionts changed their genomes—they have decreased coding density, many pseudogenes, & degraded biosynthetic pathways.

Archaea are single-celled life forms that prospered when the Earth was hot. You can still find them in extreme environments like hot springs, hydrothermal vents and salt lakes. Turns out they also make methane in your gut!

Now when I fart, I'll blame archaea.

Some metabolites these two form together could promote cancer. Others might suppress it.
