#Metroidlike

this is probably it, but it's kind of like if we said "metroidlike" for the same idea because she has to run back to her ship real quick at the end. There's other stuff
As far as I can tell the "wariolikes" are based primarily on Wario Land 4 by way of Pizza Tower

I.e. heavily based around that game's escape sequence mechanic and less so on the features found in the rest of the Wario platformers

all anyone can EVER cite as a metroidlike is axiom verge. i dont get it
September 20, 2026 at 9:48 PM
LMAO yeah that's fair. i think axiom verge is the only one I've played i can genuinely say was a metroidlike. but i don't play that many games overall to say anything that definitive

And most games referred to as “MetroidVANIAS” don’t even have RPG elements! Hollow Knight ain’t got experience points! If someone said, “Hollow Knight is a Metroidlike!” I wouldn’t be confused, I wouldn’t play it and say, “Wait… they didn’t mention all the CastleVANIA influence!”

#GamesOfTheYears 1986: I’m a huge Metroidlike fan (get outta here, Metroidvania), but this year’s winner is a game I’ve gone back to regularly over the years. (The OG Metroid is a rare revisit.)

The Legend of Zelda was exploration unbound. Perfect for tiny me, and the gold cartridge… classic.

The prince of persia metroidlike?

Ultimately its just a word to ease categorization. I myself use metroidlike and metroidvania as separate categorization terms depending if the game leans into rpg mechanics or not. All while remembering similar games developed independently and occasionally even categorize said games as such.

What’s your poison stranger? Open world? Im enjoying Star Wars Outlaws. JRPG?Persona4 golden and bravely second. Metroidlike? Shadow labyrinth has been interesting. Platformer? Mario galaxy collection. Rouge-type? Hades and dead cells. I may be spreading myself thin lately though.

This wasn't *that* serious of a post. I'd just like to see more Metroidvania's actually put in some effort into combat. No, I don't mean turn it into a fucking soulslike you buffalo.

You're a Metroidlike if you don't. Seriously. Fusing old weapons into new, traits into new weapons, DO IT.

Played the Acrolyte demo pretty neat metroidlike will need to keep an eye on it

I referred to it as a Metroidlike in a Discord and you know what I think I'm gonna commit to this bit.

It's a Metroidlike, not a metroidvania. Stop LYING

if anything, Symphony of the Night’s modern lineage isn’t the “metroidvania”, but the soulsborne games and other soulslikes

that is effectively a 3D translation of Koji Igarashi’s contributions to the Castlevania franchise and his works are the only Castlevanias that approach metroidlike design

¿No os pasa que os despertáis a mitad de la noche con ideas reveladoras que te cambian para siempre la forma en la que ves el mundo y te relacionas con este?

Ideas como que la parte de “vania” es como que no hace ni falta en los metroidvania. Metroidlike y vas sobrao.

That’s crazy to me,because back then i felt starved for a good metroidlike that wasn’t the prime series or on handheld and by that point the only games on PC i was playing were point ‘n clicks.I will say the Kingdom hearts deck builder turned me off that genre cold and i never looked back.

10. Xanthiom Zero (2023)🔫
Every year I try to play at least one short and weird little Metroidlike nobody's ever heard of, and this year's selection was a nice little pixel love letter to the original game that started the genre. A cheap 4-6 hour game with pretty cool weapon customization options!
