You can remove the knees with no consequence to the cypress tree & knees in sealed chambers don't deplete oxygen (or any other atmospheric gas). So definitely NOT a root 'snorkel'.

What's left? Well, they could secure loose soil, providing extra anchoring... but most aren't in contact with soil.

I think it's really really important to have a shelf inside my tank. There's ultimately competition over substrate, over inches of surface area. These pipes will provide their whole inside and outside surface as extra room for microplants.

I'm measuring plants by cubic size instead of squared.
