Tonight’s visitor is a big-ass katydid, “greater angle-wing katydid” on my perfect milkweed:

Microcentrum rhombifolium

Looks like it might be laying eggs, or dropping a poo.

Fascinating, how this solo plant attracts bugs for a visit, but they don’t eat it; like monarch caterpillars do.

Amid all of the cicada and cricket noise, there are also a lot click sounds coming from trees at night. Those are katydids. The Birdnet Live app (which identifies bugs and other critters along with birds) said these are a katydid species called the greater anglewing.

Cotinis nitida, the common green June beetle, perched on someone's outstretched finger. its chitin shell is an iridescent jade green. Microcentrum rhombifolium, the greater anglewing, perched on someone's outstretched hand. it is a yellow-green katydid whose wings closely resemble a leaf. its antennae are noticeably long and regal.

I found a cool katydid nymph on my walk the other morning! This one was VERY well camouflaged, so I'm surprised I spotted it. I think it's a Greater Angle-wing Katydid (Microcentrum rhombifolium) or some other closely-related species.
