#Microchange
A dead stock find of vintage Diaclone/Microchange knockoffs were sold in Chicago for $50 each. Apparently Toy Federation bought a lot of them and are trying to sell them for $220 each. Yikes. That's about $50 more than they typically sell for on Ebay when they are scarce....

Robot Watch! Ubiquitous bootleg of Microchange Watch Robo this transforming timepiece was both stylish AND functional (well, until it broke anyway). This model was not released as a Transformer until G2 but this bootleg was audaciously advertised in the US Marvel TF comic (!) #vintagetoytuesday

The first two years of G1 was largely real-life things (vehicles and/or household items) that turn into robots.

While they were different lines, Microchange and Diaclone toys kinda well with each other.

But Omega Supreme feels exceptionally alien and those outliers made G1 feel special.

Another curiosity is Kronoform, another Takara line of Diaclone and Microman Microchange stuff in America and the earliest reference I can find is 4/12/84, well after GoBots and before Transformers. Interesting.

Takara rereleased in 2001 Japan original Megatron in a 16 Special package that included firing mechanism&sword of original 1983/1985 Japanese toys and
US chrome plus silencer/suppressor+stock extension from G1 1984 Hasbro toy (that first came with the 1983 Takara Microchange realistic MC-13 P38 toy)

Several differences between Japanese Takara Transformer Megatron and US Hasbro Megatron
1985 original Takara toy has gray gun+blue inner thighs despite box artwork showing red with sword.
1984 Hasbro(non-firing gun) had chrome gun with red thighs and the scope+stock from 1983 Microchange Mc-13 P38

original toy mold was Japanese
1983 Microman Microchange
MC13 Gun Robo: Walther P-38 based on 1960s Spy show Man from U.N.C.L.E.
1984 Hasbro reused mold for Transformers as Megatron in U.S.
Huge TF popularity resulted in Takara rereleasing in Japan as 1985 Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers 16

While looking for something for my panel at @tfnationltd.bsky.social tonight I found some more Takara Tokyo Toy Show booklet pages for the Diaclone and Microchange lines with the alternate design drawings for the toys that would end up as Transformers.

I hear ya, my *main* interest in this line is getting to finally have some version of Diaclones while still feeling like I'm getting something new (articulation+sculpted "stickers"). While I'm getting the G1 decos too I honestly wish they would do a pure Diaclone Battle Convoy, Microchange BB, etc..

Funnily enough, that's what the original Japanese toy that later became Megatron was called (I don't think they had a license to do so).

Nice to have Another Pickup Truck like Swerve even if he's just another Gears Retool

I would definitely like to get into more of the niche stuff, more Diaclone and Microchange, maybe. I was actually buying the 2000s Takara Microman revamp a bit, so I was bummed I missed out on the Countdown repaint you showed the other day; didn't even know about it. I wouldn't mind spreading out

Seems like a good opportunity to let people who don't already know know that the pre-Transformers versions of Bumblebee, Gears et al are from Microchange because they don't transform into cars, they transform into *toy cars*

The "M"s seen on certain Minibots was commonly believed to relate to Microchange, the toyline they came from pre-transformers. It is now known the M stands for Mysterians, a western toyline that was canceled, and its molds somehow acquired by Takara.

As a nerd I don't appreciate how much knowledge I have that I just take for granted.

I saw a video about the origin of transformers, and thought "oh yeah, everyone knows the history of how robot toys became transforming robot toys became microman/Diaclone/Microchange became transformers"

Ah, I knew about Diaclone's Waruder but never thought of Microchange, neat they got some representation but no actual toys?

he is very specifically the gun from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. as in, the pre-transformers toy is called Microchange Gun Robo - P38 U.N.C.L.E

the standard P38 toy (because, yes, Megatron has a recolour) looked like this, at least without the Decepticon symbols. they got added for Japan's release

Well, in the cartoon he was a size changing laser gun. But the toy was just the one of the many realistic transforming hand guns in the Microchange line, I think the one they used for Megatron just came with more accessories and was a little bit bigger than some of the other options.

The green kids mentioned that the bad guys capture their "CANON ROBOT" which is just Microchange Mircrox (aka Reflector) but they can only be activated with proper emotions(?) so that's why the kids are here. Just like in Layzer, the glasses nerd ends up getting his own robot.
