Was doing some reading on the Chinese Microdrama phenomenon — it's mostly a site called ReelShort where you pay ~50 cents to watch 90-second long episodes of slightly pornier Hallmark movies — and I'm losing it at these show titles.

The only mistake Quibi made was thinking folks who’d watch movies on their phone gave a shit about production values.

Microdrama apps are making money hand over fist with some of the shittiest content ever made.

Seeing industry buzz about “microdrama” shorts is so weird. Didn’t we collectively decide Quibi was a bad idea?

Nigeria and Ghana are also making a big play for the microdrama audience. Nollywood is especially suited to this transition to vertical shorts.

Hollywood is betting big on vertical microdramas, told in chunks under two minutes. Can a gimmick turn into a new form of entertainment?

Yup! If you spend all your money on sports betting (or some microdrama app that’s playing you like a slot machine) that’s money you ain’t spending at the movies or concerts or theatre!

A silent-era classic has been reframed for the vertical scroll of phone screens. Is this innovation, sacrilege, or just another way to repackage cinema history?

microdrama in a blender

the thing is that the microdrama format works in China in part because of unusual pricing models that I'm not certain a Western audience is primed to accept (typically a subscription buys you a monthly amount of tokens to spend on watching dramas, you then have to spend more if you exceed yr limit)

in retrospect though, it's interesting to think whether Quibi was ahead of its time, or was doomed by the pandemic killing commutes. (This is another interesting question about the microdrama model: lots more people in China than in the US have long commutes *on public transport.*)
