#elkedageeninsect #microvlinders #microlepidoptera

Chelonus spp.
Like most of the #Braconidae, massively under recorded.
Egg-larval koinobionts, mainly of hosts with concealed larvae; in Britain they are associated almost entirely with microlepidoptera.

Following up those last 2 reposts about bagworms (Psychidae) with this fine plate from the British Entomological Society's 1978 compendium of 'Illustrated Papers on British Microlepidoptera'.

#elkedageeninsect #microlepidoptera

I've been avoiding collecting backyard microlepidoptera because I'm TERRIBLE at curating them (I'm too clumsy to pin them without destroying them, and point-mounting is not a great idea because the glue doesn't adhere to their scales), but there are just SO MANY of them. #entomology

Microlepidoptera are challenging, but fun. Here is a carrion moth Monopis weaverella, that appeared tonight.

#ElkeDagEenInsect #Microlepidoptera

Have a couple of tiny floofs for your Wednesday evening: a microcaddisfly and a microlepidoptera. Bonus points if you know which is which. #entomology

We mustn’t overlook the little guys, the microlepidoptera. These are settling moths that land on the flower to feed. They are hugely important pollinators. 📷: Scoparia biplagialis on Solidago sp. by Jeanette Jaskula CCBYNC4. #pollination #MothWeek #TeamMoth #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Oh, I tried a different black light setup on the back porch tonight and collected a handful of new species: a couple of leafhoppers, a microlepidoptera or two, a caddisfly, and a very tiny parasitoid I'll likely never ID. Not a bad night! #entomology

#elkedageeninsect #microlepidoptera

Before Richard South's two volumes on moths in the Wayside & Woodland series finally settled the Macro/Microlepidoptera distinction, the bagworms (Psychidae) were often treated as Macrolepidoptera - as here in Charles Barrett's British Lepidoptera

Another day, another handful of new insect species from my backyard (today it's a tiny parasitoid wasp, some sort of fruit or frit fly, and a neat little microlepidoptera).

Have you seen any Glyphipterix Cocksfoot moth? They are indeed tiny and not essy to identify, and more common than you think.

As I've understood it these last few years, macros have their common name and scientific binomial

Most micros were binomial only until recently, and common names were unofficial

This is *the* checklist from Jim Wheeler
