This turned out to be a good thing, because the Japanese would not stop clattering it into things. By which I mean their own ships.
As we've seen above, Mogami struck sister ship Mikuma whilst participating in the Midway Campaign. The Americans happily downgraded the crippled Mikuma.

First big difference in the newer-tool Mikuma - a much larger and more complex foremast. The blast bags are also there now, as are the Midway operation recognition flags on the turrets. #HistScaleModels
